depends on how bad the rain is but a plastic bag if ok for quick in/out of the bag
type of photography.if the rain is falling straight down an umbrella works well
above that are things like aquapac and
    proper housings.

Kata make some great gear - http://www.kata-bags.com/productFRM2HS.asp?p_Id=269&Version=Photo

Aquatech would probably be the best (and most expensive). - http://www.aquatech.net/c--46--sportshields.aspx

I have the Aquatech stuff, but have previously used Kata.

Other than that, I've seen people use plastic bags very effectively, and even cling film. :)

I bought a waterproof cover that fits over my bag from a camping store.

it's really handy anytime I get caught up in a shower and need to protect my gear.

Thanks for all the tips, the aquapac looks like it might do the job, can anyone recommend the quality of them?

I would guess that the aquapac would also distort your image or degrade the quality of image, due to the fact it's fully waterproof and sealed.

More designed for under water photography than just protecting your gear from rain.
