Anyone have photographs of flooded Cork/Galway courses? I know someone on here was due to play Mitchelstown on Saturday. Was it even open?

That was me going to mitchelstown. I didnt even attempt it in the end. Decided to stay in cork city and sup pints for the day.

I doubt it was open because i paid for the round with my laser card online but no money has been withdrawn from my account.

apparently they lost a metre of rough in some places near the lake on Killeen and it won't be open for another 10 days. Looks a smashing course though, have you played it Kevin?

Is it in a bad way? Some friends of mine are supposed to be heading there this weekend.

In regards to Killarney I’m not bothered whatever the optimistic captain or head greenkeeper, along with 3 mobile or the Irish PGA say, they must all be sh*ttin it right now! Part of the course is seriously flooded and surely to god this must have a long term affect, although within saying that they have till August to get it sorted. This rainfall has been extreme and hopefully wont happen again but who knows, cant see there being many dry spells heading in towards the Winter, so that wont help the greenkeeping team.

Know there’s a few greenkeepers on here would be interesting to see what they think?

Dooks is also getting a bit of a pounding at the moment, with a large part of the guarding Rossbeigh sand bank having been washed away.

Played it three times over the last 30 years. It works really well in the landscape it has at its disposal. No over-design elements here!

That's a crying shame. That place is just beautiful

I hear in the Slieve Russell there is currently 6 holes in play.

This weather must have serious problems on the new Jeff Howes designed course, the Farnham estate, who are desperately trying to open their back 9.

I think you'd be surprised at the ability of turf to recover. If you consider the hammering Tees and Fairways and Greens can take during the winter, this is all relatively easily recovered. I grew up near the Callows beside the Shannon, if you seen them during the winter you'd be amazed how they appear as green pastures during the summer.

The one worry would be greens as they are delicate enough during the summer, so potential damage may be caused there.

This was washed away 12 months ago, but the breach is certainly getting wider. The golf club doubled the height of the stone dune reinforcement above the foreshore early this year, and so far have had very little erosion from the sea. Early thoughts about closing the gap in the Rossbeigh spit seem wildly optimistic now - as the experts said at the time, the sea has to be left to its own devices - it literally has all the time in the world. I'll post a picture here next time I go up there.

Yeah, fine protection work done from left of the 4th tee box all the way down and around the 10th tee. Delighted to hear it's doing its job. Magnificent course and always a great welcome. Even for people from Cork!

I'd say ESPECIALLY people from Cork. :)

    Massive photo, Oliver, thanks!

I hope you didn't take it while you were looking for an out of bounds ball! :D

Ah Yes ! Just a little thin with the approach to the sixth green. ;)

I must admit we do find the odd Pro V1 down there, when we're on our dog walk many a morning.

Just to round this off, it's nice to hear your comments about Dooks. So you might be interested to hear that the club is in the process of securing land alongside the shore that you'll see ahead of you when walking down the 10th fairway. They had an EGM about this a couple of weeks ago, which unfortunately I missed, but I believe the intention is to develop the course on this land, and release the present 16th/17th holes for practice facilities. These plans would be long-term, but may come about in your lifetime if not mine !

Played that course a few times.

My father in law ( from Killarney ) reckoned the 18th on that course flooded a lot .

However indeed the photos are dramatic in the extreme.

As long as they arent being eroded (which I doubt) the greens should also be fine. Their main problem is trying to stay alive whilst being cut so short and not being able to photosynthesize enough due to lack of leaf. This time of year they are longer than normal (and since they are underwater!) they are not being cut at all for over a week.

My one concern would be with the drainage sleeves getting full of junk and needing to be dug up and cleaned out.

fret no more Killarney the greatest parkland course in Ireland will be ready for the Irish Open in August alright. And the course manager (not captain :D) is not being overly optimistic

You're making yourself sound very old! Yeah, I heard that Dooks bought the Commonage. A great move. There's a huge amount of land out there and I understand that they'd only need a small amount of it for the few new holes they'll need. Sounds like that won't upset the natterjacks too much! ;)

Natterjacks ? They're always upset about something.

Oh, sorry - you meant the toads. I thought you were talking about the ladies.
