    Hi,
I have a friends laptop which is absolutely riddled, a number of microsoft services are disabled, OS isnt functioning properly at all...

I think the best thing is a clean reinstall because i dont think they have much on it. The only problem is that they cant find their windows cd. Is their anyway of reinstalling without it?

Just for my own satisfaction, i spent a while trying to install freeware/evaluation virus control hoping it would scan and remove the viruses. The problem i had was because the OS wasnt working right i couldnt seem to do installations, so i tried doing it in DOS but its a nightmare trying to install an antivirus and then you need internet access to update its definitions list. Is there anyway to install the whole antivirus onto an usb(on another pc) and then run it from the usb to scan the harddrive of the infected pc? I know i am probably wandering into more professional recovery but its bugging me that i am looking at a complete reinstall, i feel i should be able to nail it without reformating the harddrive....

    Thanks for any info!
