Rent relief living at home

    Hi,

Does anyone know if it is possible to seek tax relief retrospectively on rent paid to the parents while living at home? I would be looking to say that I gave 400 euro per month.

Also, with this would the parents be then expected to pay tax on this?

For two of these years I was paying a mortgage on a house, but at the same time living at home. Revenue know this, do you think they would ask questions if I submitted a request for those two years?

    Thanks in advance.

    James.

Did you actually pay them 400 euro per month or are you just saying you did?
Because you will be expected to provide evidence of this, and you parents will be expected to have paid tax on the amount.

If they didn't pay tax on the amount at the time, they may be liable to penalties now.

Yes, I actually did pay them 400 euro per month.

I am doing some research on this and there are some posts on boards dated 2006, and essentially around 100 per week should not incur any penalties on the parents.
