    Hi,

Whats the difference between these two versions of the Mac?

    Are both the new iMac?

Essentially the difference is that the i7 supports Hyper Threading technology. This means that the i7 is able to run 8 processes simultaneously (2 threads per processor), effectively appearing to have an 8 core processor in the computer. The i7 iMac currently out performs the top of the line Mac Pros.

The i5 is also quad-core but doesn't support Hyper Threading, it has a feature called Turbo Boost. Turbo Boost allows the speed of the cores to be increased in short bursts, the speed increase is dependent on the number of cores in use. The fewer cores in use, the greater the speed boost, so single threaded applications will also get a performance increase.

The i7 is the current generation of technology available from Intel, the i5 is the previous generation and is a step above the Core 2 Quad and Core 2 Duo technology.

The i5 is the default processor for the top of the line iMac, the i7 is an available upgrade for the model.
