Is it just me or is it seriously packed this year? the special collections reading area is always full nowadays, and every table on the first floor was taken this afternoon. Was it like this last year??
Also, to the guy watching dave chapelle youtube vids this afternoon around three-next time pick somewhere else. idiot.

Funny, I was in there today for the first time in weeks and thought the same; queues for the photocopier and reception were pretty big and that was around 12ish?

That'll be the last-minute panic as all the deadlines for assessments hit in Week 12 (Week 10 for First Years!). The appearance of the exam timetable is also a bit of a wake-up call!

I don't think it helps that all the Arts students who can't get a place in their own library like to come up to our library (Science) instead, as if we don't have enough problems already. I normally wouldn't mind but sweet Christ some of them are there from 9/10 o'clock in the morning!

I thought that Arts and Science students were in the same library? Along with the Law, Commerce etc. etc. students.

A lot of people in the morning just plonk all their stuff on a desk and leave so they'll have it for later in the day...Kind of rude when they're not even using it for most of the day.

Yeah, I've noticed that it seems a lot busier this year compared to last year, too. That said I wasn't around the library half as much last year.. but i wonder why that is? not just these past couple of weeks, but during the whole semester, even, there seems to be a lot more people around.

Yes indeed meeka it has been extra busy (from what I can see) for at least a month now. lol at cian's digust that students are studying in the morning!

Is there a mystery library somewhere i don't know about?? Three floors of one library is still one library..

The location of books in a library doesn't necessarily mean that section should be for students of that field or discipline. It's quite a ludicrous complaint, to be honest! I do agree, though, that students leaving their stuff there all day is wrong. Why don't the staff go around on a sweep every 15 minutes? I'm sure they'll blame staff cuts, but they never really made good on this empty threat of clearing areas, in all my experiences of being in the library.

They do it during the summer. Sometimes.

The place normally has to be bursting at the seems before they'll do it though.

I prefer the reading room to be honest. Even though you do still get a lot of people just taking spaces and never using them...

They went through a serious power trip on this when I was an undergrad, (2000/3 ). Totally my fault and all but I was away from my desk for 35 minutes as opposed to 30 (hands up in the air, my bad, I got over it). My stuff was literally being thrown into a pile onto the floor with my jacket and laptop and a rather sheepish looking student being directed into my seat. The 'man' was clearing my stuff and instructed the student to sit there, even though they protested because they felt a bit mean taking my seat with me standing there. I didn't care as yer 'man' was going around scraping books off tables who had gone over their time like a trigger happy gunman so I nabbed another one about two minutes later.

Maybe they will come down heavy again in a few weeks..

Back on topic...students are actually getting serious and want to study? Could this be a reason?

The thing is yesterday at least there wasn't a free seat on the whole first floor, even if you wanted ot clear empty spaces you couldn't (and in fairness 15 minutes is a little mean, people deserve time to eat occasionally!). I hate to say it but could it be because of 'teh recession'? A friend remarked earlier in the semester that he never saw as many bikes on campus.

In the library today and it was fairly jammed, probably the busiest ive seen it but i was not in there since last week!
One libo cop was on a serious power trip today!
I got a phone call when i was checking out a book, it lasted 10 seconds max! then walked over to desk reserve to check for a book after and a libo cop tapped me on the back and started giving out to me for "having such a obvious conversation in the library" and went on that if i did it again id be removed from the library and then told me turn my phone off, i said it was on silent, and he got very adamant about turning it off till i did!!! wtf! and if you wanted a seat upstairs there is barely any and they don't appear to be moving books etc that have been sitting idle for long over half an hour.!!
ok no relevance here really but sure why not!

I would consider the Arts and Science floors to be separate librarys. I mean if the extension out the back can be called the Nursing library why can't the ground floor be the Law library, the first floor be the Arts library and the second floor be the Science/Engineering library?

Because that actually is a separate building.

It's connected to the main library by a walkway. The other floors are just that. Other floors in one building.

What are you doing answering your phone in the library??? There's signs up everywhere about it now, seems to be a lot more frequent lately.

The computer labs can be useful for study space when the library is full, or else an empty room class room.

it was on silent and it was in the lobby! i wouldn't answer it if i was in the library area, i was on the way out and its not like the lobby area is silent. a bit over dramatic we thought in fairness.

The lobby is still part of the library and even if people are talking there they shouldn't be.

Well most people wouldn't consider a need to be fully silent there, the very nature of it being the entrance and reception to a library would mean there is going to be noise! anyway this is all beside the point. i have seen library attendants walk past people sitting down while having a conversation on their phone inside in the library twice this year and they were not stopped so we do think that the library steward was on a bit of a power trip today!;)

I'd say it'd be ok to talk in the lobby. They do have a string quartet in there every year and people do have to talk at the circulation deck, so it'd be odd if they started giving out about people whispering around there.

The rules are there for a reason
If you can't stick to the rules, use the door.

So allowing a string quartet to play in the lobby does not constitute as noise but a few seconds of a conversation does? There should be either no noise in there at all or they should not have signs saying no noise while breaking there own rules!

Whispering is different to chatting loudly or having a phone conversation. Just because you are in the lobby doesn't mean you won't disturb people who are working, there is the reserve section to the right, and the special collections out to the left, and through the middle there are plenty of people working as well. All these people will be able to hear conversations at normal voice levels, or phone calls, and its very annoying. I do a lot work in the special collections section atm on the microform machines and its very annoying to see and hear people answering their phones as they walk to the lobby from that section, or being able to hear conversations in the lobby as has happened.
