PS3 - WON'T BOOT UP PROPERLY???

    Hello folks,
I need some advice please. We have a PS3,it's approximately 12 months old. My kids have got in to the habit of turning it off from the socket, not letting it shut down properly. So now when we turn it on, the green light comes on for a few seconds and then reverts to the Stand By mode, with the red light flashing.

Any suggestions about solving this will be VERY much appreciated.

Yeah thats not good, tell them to hold down the "PS" button on the controller so they can turn off the console without even getting off their a$$ :)

Try holding down the power button for a few seconds when turning the console on, it will make a few beeps to confirm. that may work....

Yes CombatCow, I tried that, it made a few beeps, then the green light came on for a sec, then reverted to the red Stand By light... but nothing at all on the screen. Previously, the wave came up on the screen with the PS3 logo.

Is there any way to reset/reformat the unit??? Yes, I looked up the Sticky re FAQ - but the Turn on/Turn off option to Reset the unit isn't happening.

    Just from my recent experience:

Step 1. power on standby - power light red - press and hold the power light until it goes from red, to green and back to red.

Step 2. next press and hold the power button and wait for the two beeps in quick succession. It should go, beep.....beep beep!! Once you hear the two beeps release the power button.

Not sure what should happen after that 'cause it never worked for me but you should be presented with a menu for recovery options.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks Porninferno,
I have tried versions of your suggestion in order to access the Reset Menu, but No Joy! Can you give me the exact breakdown of the sequence as I have tried this 20 times, including unplugging it from the unit. I can ill afford to have this pack up on us this close to Christmas.

    Thanks in anticipation

Hey. Sorry to hear about that. I'm on my third playstation, and the previous two both had a fate like yours. Flashing red light on trying to turn it on.

I'd ring the Playstation support line straight away and they'll tell you the best way to handle what's happened and probably organise a replacement under your warranty. They'll ask for your console number (on the back of the PS3) and guide you through some steps. They do go through the reset menu that Porninferno is talking about, but there is a certain way to go through it so as to reduce damage your system by selecting certain options in a certain way.

What he said!!! Exactly what he said!

It's still using/writing to the HD until it shuts itself down.

It sounds like you have the YLOD.
When you power on the machine keep a close eye on the light. When you turn it on it will go green, and then yellow for an instant, followed by it turning red and beeping 3 times and powering off. If it does then you have the Yellow Light of Death.

    Do a search !!!

PS3 firmware 2.50 allows easy access to recovery menu

    Quote:
PS3 firmware 2.50 is sporting a new feature which lets you access the recovery menu by holding down the PS3's power button while it is switched off until you hear 3 beeps. The menu will display the following options:
    1. Restart system
    2. Restore default settings
    3. Restore file system
    4. Rebuild database
    5. Restore PS3 system
    6. System update.

I have read on other forums that it doesnt work on all variants of PS3.
But you could restore from a removable storage media with firmware on it.
Worth trying for all people who have bricked PS3's.
Some people had to do this twice for it to work.
