I am looking for any suggestions that anyone may have for a new busineass. I am currently working in the public sector but my contract is finishing up at xmas. I feel now would be a good time to look at own business options as I am not leaving a job and also I have applied for hundreds of jobs and most of them did not even get a reply. There are also really generous grants for county enterprise boards which would be a big help. Has anyone spotted any niche markets, seen a lack supply for certain products.I am trying to put some ideas together at the moment. Anyone who has any suggestions would be much appreciated.
We could use this as a business ideas forum for anyone in a similar position as myself and just to get the mind working in that direction.

    Regards
    New Boards member

    Hey welcome to boards.

First of all there has been plenty of these type of threads popping up so you should do a search, either through boards.ie or if you can't figure it out just google it, boards.ie new business ideas.

You most likely aren't going to get the answers you would hope on a site like here, as you can imagine, if anybody frequenting a entrepreneurship forum had a really good idea which they thought could make them a lot of money they wouldn't be willing to just post about it on the internet so that somebody else could make the money from their idea.

You should look at the sticky's in the main forum and then maybe look through sites such as www.springwise.com

But you must understand that it is the easiest thing in the world to say i'm going to start a business (and thats when you know what business you want to start etc) but its a total different kettle of fish getting funding etc. Even the best theoretical business' fail.

but best of luck with it anyway.

    Hey Nobby and welcome.

Tell us about your background and the areas your interested in.
I am trying to put some ideas together at the moment. Anyone who has any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Most people won't share their business ideas for obvious reasons.
I mean if you had a great business idea would you be on here telling us about it?

You could have a look at this site for some ideas.

Hi Nobby, Most people start a business in an area that interests them or they have worked in. What are your hobbies etc.

If and when you have an idea that you think would be a viable business, keep it to yourself as much as possible.

I have an interest in Martial Arts, and one of the business ideas that I was reseaching was selling Martial Arts products specifically Mixed Martial Arts products, ie. Clothes, gloves, shorts, rash guards, GI's etc. UFC stuff.
I made the mistake of researching for this business on boards in the Martial Arts forums. Silly me.

Anyhow, I made the contacts with the different manufacturers in the states and beyond, done a Start your own Business Course, doing more research on the Market, getting my Plan together, and was waiting to get funding organised.
This took a little too long/clearing off a Credit Union loan so I could get a larger one to fund my business.

In the meantime, shock horror, someone has started a similar business to the one I had planned to do. UltimateMMA.

The moral is, Keep Your Ideas to yourself until your ready to go.

Good luck and welcome to boards.

You can try to have a look at these sites:

    http://halfaloaf.ie
    http://collab.ie
    http://talenttank.ie

While not all of them are exactly what you want, they all have information/idead around unemployemnt and starting business.

    Best of luck

Thank you all very much some very useful advice and contacts. Any other useful links or websites that anyone has used in the past as a resourse would also be great.

    Hi Nobby,

If you have some ideas you might want to check out the following thread that's listed in one of the stickies:
A quick and inexpensive way to find out if there is a market for your product/service.

    Hope it helps.
