I'm trying to determine attitudes to online backup.
    Do you use it?
    What made you get it??
    How much do you pay?

    Many thanks

No don't use it...Don't need to!
No need, I use external hard drive.
Dont fancy having my data on a server that is not my own.

I do work for a company that use online backups, we had issues with a certain host not so long back, they couldn't meet our needs, and seemed unable to provide answers to our questions.

    Not really a security issue.

A better question would be - If you use online backup what if any encryption do you use ?

we use this crowd for off-site backups for some of our clients:

    www.datahaven.ie

We prefer to encrypt any data locally before it goes across the wire (via SSL) so I'd suggest if you're going to use a similar solution you do the same.

The cost of the service is negligible, maybe because there seems to be a lot of competition in this area

No need, I use external hard drive.

You have single location risk - a flood , fire etc. could kill the computer and backup.

I also use an external hard disk but also use windows live skydrive to backup documents and codeplex to back up source code.

Ive also used SaveNet.ie, no problems with the service so far.

Quite handy for a small company

I use SOS, http://www.sosonlinebackup.com/ , set for full privacy so they do not have my encryption key.

What size of data and are you looking for a true backup or just a sync problem?

I use Dropbox to sync my Work PC {Win & Linux}, Home PC Win7 and Laptop.

Dropbox is software that syncs your files online and across your computers.

Put your files into your Dropbox on one computer, and they'll be instantly available on any of your other computers that you've installed Dropbox on (Windows, Mac, and Linux too!) Because a copy of your files are stored on Dropbox's secure servers, you can also access them from any computer or mobile device using the Dropbox website.

My way of doing things may seem a bit long winded...

I use a subversion client (Tortoise SVN) to sync my folders between my 2 computers and a pair of external HDDs. I just leave my laptop next to my pc and the folders sync automatically, saving older versions of files in hidden folders within their original directory.

The obvious disadvantage of this is that all 4 locations are occasionally on the same table. But I build all my computers myself and I'm 100% sure they're not going to blow up just from syncing files (Though I got worried for a while when I tried to play Metro 2033 on a DX9 system :D). Both HDDs can fit in a single pocket, so in case of an emergency I know what I can grab.

    Hi Noelmcc,
Can I ask do you have any affiliation or connection to this company?
I am always suspicious of first time posters eager to recommend.
I will reinstate the link if you post some clarification and perhaps a reason why you would recommend them.
