Can't understand why no-one has started a thread on him yet. Is he not one of the most annoying djs on radio at the moment?!
He wrecks my head, comes across as really stupid and never seems to know what's going on outside of his little bubble.
I don't listen to him any more, but he used to be on the whole time when I was in my last job.
Luckily I don't have to listen to him any more!

Aye. I'm not saying your opinion isn't relevant in the bigger scheme of things, but if you don't listen to Ian Dempsey, and have no intention of doing so, why bother bringing it up?

He's probably looking for peoples opinions on him as this is a forum

I agree, he is terribly annoying, not nearly as bad as the two Rays that follow him tho

The quizzes are what tip me over the edge. I start driving to work at 8 but as soon as he starts one of those stupid quizzes around 10 past I change to Morning Ireland.

For God sake Dempsey, I'm only 28 and look at what you have me doing!

I dont listen to him, he bugs me, dont like style or his inability to the to the end of a sentence. Dont like Gift Grub either or the Bannisteoir sports guys, so all in all give the fcuker a wide berth.

Gift Grub is (or was) about the only thing that's bearable about the show.
Otherwise it's Dad rock interspersed with chart crap and Dempsey's constant meandering on whatever popular subject, with an overdose of product placement or barefaced promotion (I realise it's commercial radio, yes)...his skiing trip shows make for particularly painful listening. Overly long interaction/banter with sports reporters also subtract from the show IMO.

It has very little quality competition at that hour...as much as I dislike it, it's inevitably what get's listened to over the likes of 2FM or the dub stations, when it's a choice of what to listen to on the work or van radio (the only places I ever hear it).

It survives, the same way Darcy does, on the premise that it's target audience grew up with these people on their daily dose of children's TV and find comfort and reassurance by their presence.
Me, I want to hear socky and zuppy doing breakfast radio...

Jaysus you lads are hard on people! I can't say i have a problem with him at all, its light and in the mornings thats what i want, and the interaction with the sports people doesnt bother me in the slightest. Dont understand why people listen if they dont like it, if there is nothing better on stick on a cd.

I don't find Dempsey that annoying to be honest. At least compared to Ray Darcy and Ray Foley who I can only stomach in miniscule doses.

Really? Never heard of a communal radio at work?
I'm finding him especially annoying lately, the way he always drowns out the end of songs by singing along, the inane things he says about subjects he clearly knows nothing about and don't get me started on the hundreds of unnecessary outside broadcasts, the ski trip is painful to listen to. And Gift Grub has lost the run of itself totally, they now have someone pretending to be Daniel O'Donnell pretending to be someone else? Gah...

In fairness i did think that after i posted it but someone mentioned about listening to it in the van, im in the fortunate position that i listen to whatever i want. I sympathise for those that cant

ian dempsey - he's shocking bad. most of the time i don't think he listens to what people are saying. sometimes you hear him with gift grub and he nearly has to be prompted to say something because he hasn't copped that Mario is waiting for a certain comment/reaction. Even when he reads out text messages you sense he has look back over them and interpret what the person is saying. he eventually gets it.

as someone else pointed out above whats the story with him singing the end of the songs.

someone else made some reference to the rays that are on after him. ray d'arcy is a pain to listen - thinks he joe duffy (joe duffy is a pain!) with his preaching and opinions. on the other hand ray foley and his gang are brilliant. have to love the friday show where they play all the old tv show theme tunes. "love the show foley!"

Have to agree with you about Foley, mans a legend. Friday's show is a cracker but im normally in the office on fridays and no access to a radio.

    ......

The bane of my life. Like other people have said he isn't as bad as D'ARSEy or that gimplord Foley, but he is pretty bad. Its like saying that a kick in the bóllix is not as bad as having your fingernails pulled out with a pliers. I think the trouble with a lot of these shows is that they go on for way too long. D'ARSEy and Dempsey were good the first couple of years they were on, but they get stuck in a rut, repeating the same tired formula ad nauseum, and because there is so little competition in national radio here in Ireland, they can keep serving up the same old rubbish way past the time they should have been replaced.

I usedn't mind Dempsey when he was doing 2fm's breakfast show, but that was 11 yrs ago and more...these days it's just safe, middle-of-the-road radio. Some people like that, same background to their morning every day but, for me, familiarity breeds contempt and it just doesn't make for the best listen first thing in the morning.
Agree that he's the top pick of the him and the two Rays, though. Like I said gift grub is the only saving grace and even that's getting to be a bit stale.
I don't know who they'd have to replace Demo...they're big shoes to fill, to be fair to the man.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,988 ✭✭✭Bondvillain

I have no real opinion on the Ian Dempsey show (I don't really listen often enough to justify being wowed or repulsed) other than to say that when I did listen regularly, personally I found him fairly pleasant on the airwaves, the lack of juvenile banter was a plus, and that his taste in music seemed to be decent enough.

As well as that, despite the format now being a bit tired & long in the tooth, Gift Grub (which I DO get to hear) remains the funniest comedy insert on radio despite a notable decline in quality.

Even taking this notable decline into account, it still far outclasses the whiny, incessantly disastrous efforts on 98fms morning show, or the utterly puerile output of Oliver Callan's gift grub lite knock-off over on 2 fm.

Anyway, speaking of puerile, is there any chance we could get a boards moratorium on :
    A) the complete non-ironic third party printed use of quotes that Ray Foley has attempted to popularise for propaganda purposes; and
    b) the emphasising of the 'arse' part of Ray D'Arcy's surname, especially, (but not exclusively) through typing it in capitals?

Every time they're used, funny dies a little bit inside.

I'll give you another thing that'll annoy you - he never just gives the song title, always the line the title appears in - "that was meatloaf, and he'd do anything for love, but he won't do that" - listen out for it! also, listen to him saying "at this stage" - sorry in advance!

I like Iano, but I've been hearing him for probably 15 years and he hasn't changed a bit. That show has become one long in-joke between him and his crew. If he didn't have Mario, it wouldn't be worth listening to, imo.

The thing about Ian Dempsey is that I only noticed how good he is when he's replaced by someone when he's on holidays.
    He's fairly inoffensive.
But there are a few reasons why I stopped listening.
    1. As someone pointed out the whole show is really one long ad.
    2. Paul "boring voice, thinks he's funny but he's not" Collins. Can't stand the man! They give this gimp so much time on the show and then something like the movie review gets rushed.
Just listen to Gift Grub at 8:15 then switch.

Oddly enough when Foley filled in for him at some stage (summer '08?), I thought he was a much stronger radio presence, better music and a better overall feel...it's a shame his show turns to muck when you put it on at lunchtime and throw a cast of idiots into the mix to "bounce off each other" and talk a load of crap.

Hope it's okay to dig up old threads... Was a listener to Ian Dempsey, I do think he is a decent guy, but some parts of the show need revamping, IMHO. Gift grub is tired, at this stage. Paul Collins is painful to listen to. And as for Paula thingy who does the show biz news...that laugh makes me want to bang my head off the nearest wall to relieve the pain.

ive posted this before, but he amout of time he responds with a yeeahhhhhh or wayyyyhhayyyyy drives me mental. its usually when he cant respond properly when having "banter". Usually cuts off people with it too. Oh, the Bowie fan rubbish should stop. He only seems to be a fan of Under Pressures and Heroes

Completely agree about that paula one. That laugh would put you off you breakfast. Also the news and sport are awful dragged out. Paul Collins would wreck your head. Maybe if they started the news on time it wouldn't be so bad. Always used to listen to the show but don't bother with it now.

Was Mairead Farrell in for Ian this morning? I could have sworn I heard her talking to Sinead and Paul after the 08:30 bulletin. The bus driver had Today FM on, and I had to check my watch because I thought it was after 9, but it was around twenty to or a quarter to ;)

Yes, 8.30 headlines are almost always late. Then Ian will have an "interesting chat" with the newsreader about the lighter story on the news (survey finds 75% of people need an app to tell them what day of the week it is or Kylie Minogue buys a new handbag in Paris etc) so on and so on , that's a few more minutes wasted, by the time the sport comes on, you'd have lost the will to live.
