Insurance Quote

    Hey everyone,

I've recently bought my first car (a 1999 Daewoo Lanus, 1.3L). I'm a 22 year old male living in Galway City and I'm on my provisional lisence. I have no no claims bonus or penelty points as it's my first car.

I've been shopping around for insurance and thought I had a good quote at 1,380euro. I had a look on insure.ie after talking to a friend and after talking to them on the phone, I got a quote of 948euro. This sounds really cheap to me considering I'm a young male, first time driver etc. Am I just being too suspicious? Or is there something here I'm not seeing? I'm going to call them again tomorrow (as I completely forgot to ask who this insurance would be with:o) and I'd like to be able to ask a few questions to find out if I'm getting a good deal or not. Any suggestions?

Look at the difference in excess and any additional features such as windscreen cover. I have to say those both sound like pretty good deals - I paid €2300 for my first year when I was 21!

Windscreen cover was actually the main thing I was going to ask about. My brother's car had an unfortunate encounter with a lad who didn't like windscreens...

If they don't offer windscreen cover, can I get that covered with someone else? Sorry for the newbie question...

You may have to pay extra for it, but it shouldn't be too much extra (€50-100? I forget). Excess will make a much bigger difference.

Forgive my ignorance, but what's "Excess"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,638 ✭✭✭zilog_jones

The excess is the amount you will have to pay if a claim is made. This can typically vary between €200 and €500 with different insurance policies, but some like XS Direct seem really cheap because their excess is very high (€1000-4000).

Ah, got it. Thanks for that, will definetely ask about the excess and the windscreen cover tomorrow. Anyone got any other advice on what I should ask about?

you have to make sure it's a full comprehensive insurance not just third party or anything.

I'm not actually looking to get fully comp'd as it would drain the last of my funds and the car didn't cost me much anyway. I'm getting a car so that I can get a job (it's essential in my line of work) so I'm hoping to be able to get a nicer car in two or three years time.

most likely insure.ie will be with axa give britton insurance donegal town a ring as well , they were very competivite for the my son's policy although were strong on my daughter's.

also try getting a quote off axa's website, i was with insure.ie last year and when the renewal came around they wanted more then last year even tho there was no claims made. i got insurance with axa for €200 less then what every where else was looking for.

Thats actually not a bad quote, I got my first car this year (a '01 1.0l polo) and the best quote I got was 1100euro from Hibernian Aviva and I'm 25yrs old. The highest quote I got was 1850euro, all other companies I checked with were around the 1400euro mark.

Thanks for the advice guys! I went to Axa personally as our house at home, my mum's car, my dad's car and my brother's car are all insured with them, but the quote they gave me was €2,400. That was with a discount as well apparently.

Having a joke...... You can get well under that!!

I think Axa are just trying to avoid under-25s, they quoted me €2,700 when I was 21 for TPFT! The car was only €2500...

Well I went with it in the end and got my car insured for €950. The excess is €250. I didn't think that was too bad considering the main price. The guy I was dealing with said it's a company that try to get first time drivers onto the road, guess that was why it was so cheap. I'll probably have to pay more than that next year!

I'm 19, 2 years no claims, 2 years full licence, i'm covered comprehensive for €1k on a dohc vtec integra, all mods declared. Thats off a local broker. Quinn wouldn't even talk to me. You just need to shop around.
