Do you know how to access the BIOS setup?

When your system turns on, do you see writing at the bottom of the screen (white text) for a second or two?
Usually says "F2/F12/ETC for BIOS Set-up" or similar.
This means that after turn on, within a second or two, press the mentioned button to access the BIOS set-up.

In the BIOS you will come across a section that tells you what is booting up from first and basic instructions how to go about changing this.

    BE CAREFUL!!!

Change NOTHING else if you are not 100% sure of what you are doing.
...and leave the hard-drive as second (not third or lower) on the list - if not first - having changed "First" to the CD/DVD drive!

Bios wont even recognise it. That's my main problem. (probably should have said that in the first place, huh)

I need to get it to recognise it, basically.:P

Any BIOS updates available? Have you checked?
Strange that it won't see it at BIOS level for just a 2 year old machine.

Didnt think you can do that on a laptop.

A motherboard is still a motherboard no matter what the system.

Make sure you look up the guide if you want to open up the laptop, you will find it on the Compaq website.

I would check this before updating the BIOS imo.

Can you pick up an external drive, what are you looking to boot, you can make a bootable USB maybe, just workarounds if your in a rush.

    I want to reinstall XP.

Was booted up from USB last time by a friend.

I know I could but I'v got the disk there and I'd like to fix it anyway.

USB boot is my last resort.

How do I make it bootable from USB anyway? Never did it before.
