Top 10 is too much of an ask IMO for 2009/10 but I think the top 20 is a possibility. Here's the current Top 20 as of Jan 12th (source sportinglife.com)

Lee Westwood won the Dubai World Championship presented by: DP World after a bogey free final round 64 secured a six shot victory and with it The Race to Dubai title for 2009. Westwood, who led by two overnight, fired one of the finest rounds of his career to take the €830,675 first prize at the Earth course and also become European Number One for the second time in his career. The win takes him back to World Number Four equalling his career best. Ross McGowan came second to move to World Number 70 while Rory McIlroy's third place finish moves him to World Number Ten and marks the first occasion in the history of the Official World Golf Ranking that Europe can boast six players in the World Top Ten.

Further European success was achieved in Japan at the Dunlop Phoenix where 2009 Challenge Tour Rankings runaway winner Edoardo Molinari defeated 2008 European Number One Robert Karlsson in a play-off after the pair tied on 13-under-par 271, six shots ahead of their nearest challengers. Molinari jumps 24 places to World Number 63 while Karlsson moves up 3 to World Number 25.

Australia's Marcus Both won his maiden Asian Tour title by securing a one-stroke victory over Malaysia's Shaaban Hussin at the Johnnie Walker Cambodian Open. The win takes Both the World Number 243 a leap of 123 positions.

Yea, delighted for Shane. Great performance.

As for Rory - gutted for him after doing so well in the last three weeks. Also, gutted for the €100 I lost on him: I had him to win three tournaments this year. I'll go for the same next year mind you. Maybe a major too.

    what odds??
next year for 3 would be a good bet imo...

    No chance.

He's made the incorrect decision joining the PGA Tour and will take it's toll on him and his game. Really worry for the immediate future of the lad, he's making some shocking decisions.

He only has 1 two-week break in '10.

Rickie Fowler will overshadow McIlroy in '10.

Fowler is an extraordinary talent - his feet firmly on the ground - and one of the finest putters you'll see.

Great to see that - hope it stays like that for Ryder Cup time and the yanks will be running scared ;)

Fowler will be a fine player but to overshadow McIlroy in '10 is a huge ask and flat out bad call. Fowler may be the California kid but the boy McIlroy from Hollywood will golf he's way to top five in the world next year whilst Fowler won't.

Top 10 world ranking points earned in 2009.
    Outstanding year for McIlroy.

    1. Tiger Woods
    2. Phil Mickleson
    3. Steve Stricker
    4. Rory McIlroy
    5. Lee Westwood
    6. Paul Casey
    7. Kenny Perry
    8. Retief Goosen
    9. Lucas Glover
    10. Ian Poulter

Ewen Murray commented yesterday that if Woods drove like McIlroy he’d be unstoppable.
Well if McIlroy had Wood’s short game I think he’d be equally unstoppable.

Well, in fairness he'll have a bit of a head start.

Should be a great rivalry in the future.

Off topic slightly but ross fisher looks like a serious candidate to break into that top 10 over the next 12 months. a not too distant future winner of the european order of merit imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,098 ✭✭✭Johnny_Fontane

I'm gonna put Kaymer in as my most improved guy next year - he has the temperament for majors (imho)

I notice you stop short of the real target for top golfers - a major. Is that damning with faint praise, both Fisher and the European Order of Merit?

    good point.

meh, he'll get his major in time. for me he needs to hit a few more milestones in his career before i can consider him a genuine major contender ie an order of merit, race 2 dubai or world top 10. this year US Open he looked great with 9 to go but for me lacked the confidence in himself it takes to make the final push that comes with experience. he has the steely, determination i see in PH and he's methodical too.

kaymer is a sensational player on his day but like querios is too up and down for me. saying that, but for injury, he would have been a major player in dubai had he not mangled his foot... while carting....!?!?

Good to see that Britain has yet another player in the world's top ten.

    Well done, Rory. :D

do you not think people put too much emphasis on who is a major contender?
you can pick many players over the recent past who didn't really hit any milestones b4 winning 1,Yang,Glover and Cink prove that you don't have to be a major contender on paper to win one,
in fairness his experience in the last round in the open last year should help him next time,he shat himself in fairness

Oooooh i like the sound of this. Rory next for the front pages?!?

Quite right too. A young man such as himself shouldn't be settling down at his age. Reading some of his blog and if you didn't know better you would think it was a 60 year old woman writing it. Banging on about buying 'gorgeous little puppies' and lamps for his living room.

The only puppies a young man with millions in his pocket and the world at his feet should be out there stroking are those sewn on to the front of a couple of Las Vegas strippers.

    i wouldn't call it bashing,
i hate the way because we are Irish you're not allowed to badmouth one of our own,you get jumped on and get accused of being one of the many 'begruging irish'
just 'cause someone is born in this country doesn't mean we have to like them, does it?

no but 2nd or 3rd hand talk from a friend of a friend isn't really something I find reliable,

I know its a discussion forum and all but a lot of the threads seem to end up slagging off guys like lowry on a regular basis,

as for liking whoever couldn't agree more,
