I know the xmas is a busy time for DCU student with the exams coming up etc but I am sure some people will be trying to find some seasonal work for some extra cash over this expensive time of year. I am one of those people and I am just wondering has anybody got any good tips on places to try for work. I hear Yahoo take on a good few seasonal temps but cant find much about this online.

A lot a retail places in town do anyway, try a few of the concessions in Arnotts, etc.

Good luck trying. Most of them have gone now. Plus they all want experience, the... unpleasant people.

    Irritating.

It is so hard to get a job with no experience! How do you get experience if you need experience to get any job?

Lie that you have experience and hopefully get the job.

Or just REALLY impress in the interview.

Some of us can't even get on at the bottom. McDonalds won't even take me. Not sure about anyone else's experiences though. But I imagine they're as ridiculous as mine.

Offer to work for free for work experience.

Then if you get that and pursue the work experience placement, and if it goes well, then get a reference letter from your employer at the end, for proof of experience, for next time (for a paid work application).

Plus that employer may also offer you a paid job next time.

This is pretty much the same as what I've found everywhere. Handed out tons of CVs and filled in plenty of online applications and still nothing. You need experience or someone on the inside to put in a good word for you. At the moment there are just too many people looking for work and employers can afford to be extremely picky.

This is kind of weird, but I was wondering if there were any Japanese students at DCU in their 2nd/3rd/4th year who would want to give Japanese classes through skype? I'm never back from school till 5.30 and my parents hate driving so extra classes in person are a bit difficult. Obviously we could work out some kind of fee. :)

I'm 16, been doing Japanese since I was 12 so I know the kana and about 400-500 kanji and have pretty good grammar, but obviously with no teacher and no-one to practice with I can only get so far. I just want to get better at grammar, reading comprehension and writing and conversations because I want to do it for the leaving cert. If you're interested email me at elaine_93@live.com :)

You'd be better off starting a new thread.

Penneys are now hiring Christmas staff on Mary Street and apparently don't seem to need experienced people. Not the most fulfilling work, but still somewhat superior to not having a job.
