As per thread title ...would probably forgo any online savings to get it 'today' in Currys /PC World etc but tell me if they are very significant ...last TV was 26 inch Samsung LE32R88BD -2 years old or so...Obviously would like to get bigger screen size but not at cost of image ...LCD or Plasma etc ?Any advice appreciated ?Is it ALL about Samsung/Sony/Panasonic?

Well you could always still try for a Boardies saving with 10% in the Philips shop in Dublin.

Have a look on AVForums.co.uk for extensive info.

General consensus is that plasma TV has the edge for black levels, colour accuracy and smooth images.
However, LCD has razor sharp image which some people prefer, and uses less power.
Old issues such as image burn on plasmas are a thing of the past, but I would consider LCD if you plan to play games on your TV for hours on end.

Apparently Pioneer Kuro is "where it's at" but sadly they are pulling out of the TV market.
Panasonic still have the best plasmas. Sonys LCDs are a bit hit and miss, with clouding issues due to uneven backlighting.

I would avoid budget panels and would consider the warranty as panels can and do fail.
Don't go on the image you see in store - they are oversaturated and far brighter than you will use at home.
Narrow down your choice to around 4 TVs that meet your criteria for size, image quality, features and price. Ask the sales assistant to show you "cinema mode" or similar while your in the store.

Recommended brands: Panasonic/Pioneer for plasma, Sony/Samsung, Hitachi and Philips. LG to a lesser extent.
Sharp had a good reputation for LCD TVs a few years ago no idea if that's changed.
Consider the number of HDMI sockets if you plan to connect a lot of components directly to the TV (Sat, Cable TV, DTT, PS/3, XBox 360 Wii, Apple TV etc etc.) 3 are typical, 4 preferable.

    tl;dr
Get a Pioneer or Panasonic plasma for Bluray and DVD.
Get a Sony Philips or Samsung for game consoles. :)

A plasma is better for game consoles as well because it has near instantaneous response so fast moving images don't blur and trail as they do on most LCDs.

I have an Xbox hooked to a 50" Panasonic plasma and it is superb. The only benefit LCD has over plasma is the lower power consumption, but in a climate where we have to heat our houses for a significant part of the year, the extra power consumption of a plasma is not wasted as it is given off as heat and just adds to that given off by radiators or whatever you use.

Got a Panasonic 42G10 for 984 in Powercity...tried the Phillips shop but to be honest was put off by sales guys dismissing plasmas out of hand (except maybe at 50 "...) and insisting that an older spec TV (considerably cheaper) had a better picture/image quality than a newer one when it appeared to my eye the newer one was vastly superior ...
Decided against a brand new model Samsung 40 inch LCD ultra slim 6000 series in Powercity 1032 after 100 euro 'rebate' .Its plain to see plasma looks better than LCD...
Very happy so far ...blows our old 32" Samsung LCD out of the water...

i've been wrestling with decision on which 37" to get for Sport / Blu ray / viewing angle
and keep coming back to the (1)panasonic plasma x10 even though its only HD ready but great value imo at €600

anyway ive narrowed it down to plasma above and
(2)Sony 37w5500 which you can get for €850
(3)Philips 8 series for about €900 but seems difficult to manage settings
(4)LG LH7000 because i'm going to LG 2.1cblu ray system
(5)finally some kind of samsung but there's so many sammy models i get confused, think the samsung led 6000 sounds good but its too pricey at over 1k
