rubbing/scraping noise coming from the car while clutch isnt engaged, slowly gets stiffer to engage the pedal, noise is louder when foot is off clutch and quietens down when you press clutch

There are several different failure modes for the clutch, the release bearing may fail, the friction plate wear out, cable may break or hydraulic components leak, or the pressure plate may fail due to broken springs, each one will have different symptoms. A squealing sound when you depress the pedal is probably the bearing on it's way out. Engine revs increasing without any increase in road speed, particularly when climbing hills or attempting to accelerate would point to a worn friction plate, difficulty engaging or changing gears could be a failed pressure plate, stretched clutch cable or worn seals in the clutch master or slave cylinders.

As the gearbox has to come off it is nearly always worth replacing all the major components (friction plate, pressure plate and bearing) at the same time as the cost of the labour is more than the cost of the components. VAG engines often have a dual mass flywheel also, it may be recommended to replace that at the same time as it is easy to do when the gearbox is removed. I'm sure some of the VW specialists will be along shortly to provide more info.

Yeah I noticed it going up a hill recently, just high revs without any gain in speed so probably would point to a worn friction plate so. Only happened this once but its never happened before, so just has the alarm bells ringing.

if there's no unusual noises and your only problem is loss of power that could be a different problem altogether, what year is your tdi? there's a couple of other threads on here about tdi's losing power, unusual high revs etc

Bit of vibration in the pedal as you got to move off from a stop is another sign.

high bitting point is another sign.
my bf ford focus' clutch is on the way out: put it in high gear, give it gas while slowly removing foot of the clutch pedal - revs go up and up but car just sits there not moving and not conking out either :D
I've got quote of 270eur to get it replaced but it's old ford and we know they're cheap, he's got a driving test next month so we might still wait until he passes (or not) because now car is almost impossible to stall (and he thought he was good learner driver not stalling it once so far ;) )
