Diverticulosis/diverticulitis

I have just spent the last 7 nights in the hospital with diverticulitis  Agonising - now I know that diverticulosis is permanent, and can bring on diverticulitis. Has anyone had any experience here of managing to live without any more attacks?

I had a bit of a discussion with the docs when they insisted I try not to be constipated - I have never ever been constipated in my life, other than the first few days after an abdominal surgery (hysterectomy) six months ago, which I was told is ok, normal. I am regular, and normal stools!

I find it a bit of a coincidence that never having had bowel problems before, six months after a surgery I have had this additional problem. If I am not constipated, how can I prevent this?

Hi there, i see that your message was posted a couple of years ago but thought my info may help you my mum is a long time sufferer of diverticulitis and over the years she has treid just about everything hers is so severe she either copes with the disease or gets a bag for a stomach which no one would ever chose to have! so here some tips i hope can help you, change your diet to vegetarian stay away from all meat 100% and especialy chicken even if cooked or uncooked chicken has been left on the surface fully disinfect to avoid contamination as chicken/poultry is the worst! avoid all pips i.e strawberrys, tomatoes (take out the centre) seseme seeds ect - to help your bowl fight against any infection id strongly recommend drinking yakult daily and should you go abroad or feel an infection coming on boots have pro-biotic in tablet form which are alot stronger than the yakult - to put it simply my mum was in hospital for a week at least ONCE A MONTH! since she started taking yakult avoiding meat and pips shes been in hospital once which for her was a miracle! we recently went to egypt also and she had no problems as long as she took the tablets (obviously check with your doctor 1st that their ok for you) but when she was in an out of hospital all the time i tried to look for help and advice and wish someone would have told me this advice sooner it was just through trial and error we came across this and if your thinking you will never eat meat again i can suggest Quorn products are great (the mince can be a bit squidgy but not if you dry fry 1st) hope you find a diet to help you, my mum was also always told to take a high fibre diet but this always made her so much worse!

I had my first episode of diverticulitis at the start of this year and was hospitalised for a week. I had another minor episode less than a month out of the hospital even though I followed everything the doctor and nutritionist advised.

I'm 31 years of age and I haven't been able to find anyone else who has diverticulitis or diverticulosis. I also can't find any support groups and a lot of information out there is contradictory.

I set up a meetup diverticulitis discussion to try get people together to talk about our experiences and support one another of anyone is interested.
