They use the '1 to 10' scale.

With the new talent coming through I'd put Ireland serious contenders to win the next world cup................then again I'm Irish.

    See IRB World Rankings.

On that note, if ireland beat south africa next week, we overtake Australia in the rankings. Not that it matters or anything :D

    Yep.

NZ and SA are not great.

Although Aus are currently up and down, they should come good by 2011.

England Johnno's Old Boys Club are nowhere as are Wales. Italy and Argentina don't have the depth, if they get a few injuries, they don't have decent replacements. Interestingly, both have 2 world class number eights.

Scotland are the unknown at the moment. If they had a good 10 (ala Sexton), they could go places.

I know SA are awful, seriously dude I know you watch summer rugby. SA levels's against the Lions and the Kiwi's were far better then anything seen in the NH the past decade.

France beat a knackered SA doesn't make them a great team.

Scotland beat a transitional Oz team, I know who I'd be backing to go further in the WC

    They're brilliant.

Although they still have the issue of not turning up at some games (England vs France 2009 anyone?) which could cost them at the World Cup.

The Kiwis and Wallabies were all over the place (NZ had Donald at fly-half at the start ffs).

They were very lucky to win the Lions Series tbh.

Morné Steyn is being exposed as a very limited player who can only kick goals. Pienaar has been playing badly in the midweek games.
Without a 10, they won't get near the final.

If I was a betting man, I'd stick money on France.

    Your post is contradictory too?

IMO they'll be the best side in the world by 2011 (by some distance). They will manage to lose to England in a semi or something though!:)

I'd put money on France to beat any of the SH teams and then lose the next game to a weaker team.

Its pretty much been fixed by the IRB/Addidas that NZ will win the next WC. I for one will be over the moon if they dont win it.

Sure they were lucky against the Lions but it was a very good Lions team.

    I dont see any contradiction.

England and wales no where? Based on? We beat england by a point last year, and Wales by 3.

Do you mean by them or in comparison?

Check out newsnow.co.uk, look up rugby union, and you'll see sites from all over the world.

The cesspit that is the planet-rugby forum also has plenty of SH types. But it's not a rugby forum full of trolls so much as a trolling ground interrupted by brief bouts of rugby.

    England and wales no where?

    Watched any AIs?

Yea, saw England lose to Australia by 9. Then I saw us need a last minute try to draw against them. Wales only lost to NZ by a try and beat Argentina as well, quite impressive. Certainly better the result we had against NZ last time we played them. But considering you quoted a post referring to Irelands chances in the WC and proceeded to right off England and WAles I find it strange basing this on the AI results, especially when everyone knows how many injuries England have. I still fail to see how Wales are "no where" based on there AI results though.

A testiment to how bad nz played no?... as the pumas... with a rookie team like the one they fielded if wales didnt beat them they would have been shot

We're not really rated. You can see their point because we've yet to beat NZ and failed miserably at the last world cup.

So until we start beating the tri nation teams (and France) and topping our group in the world cup and getting to semi finals we won't have that real respect.

I'm living in SA at the moment, so I'll give my impression from here:

There is a lot of NH rugby shown - all the AIs, 6Ns, many HC and GP games - and being so passionate about rugby here, lots of it is watched, so people in general are very knowlegable about the NH teams and can certainly hold a fairly decent discussion about the Irish team and individual players. Since JDV's move I'm even able to have a chat about Munster's fortunes on a Monday morning!

Ireland are pretty well regarded down here, but perhaps considered underachievers, in particular for their performance at the last world cup. I think they would pretty much be rated the highest of the NH teams, or maybe just behind France now after they beat the Boks. Though I do think they would still classify them a good way behind Oz and NZ.

There is a lot of respect for a lot of the big names such as BOD and POC, and they like the back line, and the attractive rugby they play at times. The forwards obviously come in for a bit of criticism, particularly the slowness to the breakdown and the lack of a fetcher, which is considered so important here (and its the NH that have openside and blindside flankers the wrong way around :) ) The guy who sits beside me is a big ROG fan, still!

One thing I keep meaning to ask is what they think of George Hook's interjections during the commentary! Though they probably can't understand a word he says...

We had Irish commentary for the Oz and Fiji games (sometimes get it for 6N games too) and both times Ryle went to him during a break in play for a quick comment. Luckily we don't get any of the 'analysis'. We've Naas Botha instead

I quite like Hooky, but he's an awful tool. Wouldn't want other nations seeing him. :p

It's two years until the next world cup so it's hard to predict how teams playing well now will fare then.

Australia are pretty dire at the moment. They were lucky to get a draw against Ireland and were beaten by Scotland. It seems to me though that what they are doing is trying to build a stronger pack and develop their tight play.

They have played abysmally dull percentage rugby in the two matches I have seen and that is not really like them. But they are competing well at the breakdown and toughening up in the forwards. If they get that part of their game into gear they might turn their attentions to being a bit more adventurous in the back line and they have the tradition of doing that, so maybe come autumn 2011 they will be a threat again.

Of course they could get pissed off in the interim, sack their coach and try a completely different tack. But don't write them off just yet.

As for Ireland's chances. Will John Hayes STILL be playing? If not, who is going to be tight head?
