Upgrading 1st gen iPhone with O2

I've never availed of a phone network's upgrade feature before, so I don't know how it works, and I'm eligible to upgrade my 1st gen iPhone. What happens? I assume I can back up all data on the phone to iTunes, then get the 3G S from O2 and sync it with iTunes to get all my data back? Will this include everything like all the text messages, notes etc, or will it just be things like apps and the contact details?

Also, what happens to my old Iphone when I upgrade? Do O2 take it off me?

You back up as you described and all your data will go onto the new phone, go to O2 pay the upgrade price, sign up to a new 18 month contract, and you get to keep the old phone.

Cool. What can you do with the old phone? Does it become unlocked? Could you just give it to a friend to use?

That's up to you, It can't be officially unlocked yet but there are other ways to unlock it, you can give it to friend and sell it, all your choice.

Ya it can be unlocked unofficially or just used as an iPod.
