I spent many an hour on thinking which scope to use for stalking on my 308. And took good advice from my friend Dwighet.

I have been down the route of getting the biggest with a 8-32x60 for my 22lr and realised later WHY do that. So whats on it now is a Bushnell 3200 10x40 fixed scope and it does exactly what is required from it, after all max range wanted from it is 110m.

And the same reasoning was behind getting the scope now sitting on my 308 for stalking. WHY get something bigger when all you need is something that will get the job done.
And don't forget about all the extra weight you have to carry, there will be as much as 1/2lb extra in 50mm objective over a 40mm objective lens.

SO I have a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40 for stalking and zero @175m ish to give me 1 1/2" high @100m and 1 1/2" low @220m. This then gives me a Point Blank range of 3" from 25m out to 220m - where the target on a deer is about 5" so I'm always on the aim point.
Using Federal Fusion SP 150gr ammo. I have a drop chart made up for this ammo and it only takes a quick look to see if I need to allow for elevation on a shot.
And yes I know the rings are highish BUT when you get an offer of a set of mounts and 2 sets of rings at a good price you use what you get. :;)

So far I have had 2 shots and 2 clean kills.

    My Sako 75 in .308 with a Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x40.

I have a kahles 3-10x50 on my tikka .223 after a lot of thinking on what scope to buy,its not a massive scope because its a 25mm tube so its very light and in low light in the evenings its seriously bright and clear i have it set at 8x mag the whole time and can make shots from 50 to 250 yards without fiddling with zoom or paralex. If i were to buy a stalking rifle id be definitly be buying another:)

Swarovski, zeiss, doctor, kahles and s&b would all be serious quality scopes so its probably down to personal preferance at the end of the day-but clive makes a good point on not buying a scope thats to big or heavy.

BUT what sits on top of your 7mm 08 stalking rifle is what you should tell him.

I think the docteur is a good choice Clive...you have your opinion...I have mine...Ive looked through many a docteur scope and they are a better scope through my eyes than the leupold I use...

Can most scopes cope with the recoil of a deer hunting gun? I bought a cheap ZOS 10-40x60 scope a while back for my .17HMR. Just got myself a Remington 700 in 243 and can't afford a new scope for a long time so wondering if the ZOS scope is up for the job? I know some scopes state they can cope with 'magnum recoil' and the paper work i got with the ZOS doesn't say much. Sorry if this sounds like a daft question, I confess im no expert when it comes to scopes. cheers
