voluntary redundancy

    I have applied for voluntary redundancy the problem is the company are offering 14 redundancies and 18 have applied does it go by seniority or last in first out, any ideas please.:

    'Last in, first out' usually applies to compulsory redundancies.

    Presuming all applicants are of equal grade, it should probably be done by seniority.

    I would have thought it would been first come first served?
    That might be appropriate if everyone was on duty and worked the exact same shift.

    If shift work is in operation, it would be unfair to offer it on a 'first come first served' basis as many staff may be off duty, on nights.

    Other staff may be on annual leave, maternity leave, parental leave, sick leave, administrative leave., carers leave or compassionate leave.

    No, it does not have to be "last in, first out". This is quite a crude selection process, and does not always result in the best outcome for the business i.e. you could have all your best performers or the people with all the most essential skills leaving the business.

    They just need to implement a fair & objective selection process, and can take into account such things as essentail skills, performance, attendance, length of service etc etc

    On the other hand, the business may decide to go with the cruder selection process, especially if you are in a more traditional or heavily unionised environment.
