Thinking of Purchasing a PS3 Slim Tomorrow

    Alright lads,

I'm just creating a thread as I'm looking for some advice,

I have a bit of money in the bank account now for some discreationary purchases and I have sufficent money to get a PS3.

Most of my friends have a PS3 and although I already have an Xbox 360, I never really get to play against many of my mates online, and this is the main reason for wanting a PS3.

I seen an offer in Gamestop the other day which was a 'limited time only' offer and it was €350 for a 250GB with Uncharted 2 and Fifa 10 included, after doing a bit of research, this seems the best offer IMO, but as I've always been a Xbox man, I'm not so sure and perhaps some of you lot, who are obviously more knowlegable can give me some further hints and information?

Trading in the Xbox isn't an option either lads.

    Thanks a lot in advance,

    therokerroar.

I have a ps3 slim, bought it recently. I got it for a little less then that but in Malta so thats not really an option. To be honest, even if you treated it as an expensive blue ray player, its worth it.

There are some staggering games on PS3 (and to be honest, I'm in the same boat as you, I primaraily play Xbox). Drakes Fortune is excellent, GT prologue is great too, there are plenty of glorious games out there. For me its a single player games console and blue ray player but to be fair, its really a better console then the Xbox... its simply been underutilised (not to mention hobbled by Sony's hamfisted management and incompetence).

I got one not too long ago too and as mentioned the blu-ray side of it will blow you away.

Not a sony fanboy by a long shot but the games are generally better in my view. Friends of mine also have xbox's which is a pain with it comes to swapping games etc but overall worth it - money well spent imo.

As a value for money option, it's almost the same price as the 360 but you don't have to return to the shop as a PS3 owner to purchase a wireless adapter, xbox live subscription and so on.

As for games, with first party exclusives it's tit-for-tat. Gears of war versus Uncharted, Halo versus Killzone, Forza versus Gran Turismo, and so on. Then everything else is multi-plat anyway.

That price seems reasonable. Basically €50 for two top-tier new releases.

Cheers lads, good reviews all round so it looks like I will be taking the plunge and purchasing one of these tomorrow.

I recently bought DJ Hero and MW2 on 360 so like I said, I don't really want to trade the console or games in and my younger brother will be able to use the 360 as I'll put it in his room and use it whenever I so wish too.

Any of you lot know of any better offers than the one I mentioned in my OP? Gamestop and Xtravision are my only real options of stores in which I can get to also.

there may be good deals in the north if you are prepared to travel.
Argos often do deals on consoles and I think amazon will deliver consoles
    to Ireland now.

xmb is better looking then that childish dashboard imo, codec support better and much easier to use to stream stuff from laptop or computer via ps3mediaserver program, free online gaming, no batteries for controllers, built in wireless, you wont regret the move, you may even ditch your xbox for MAG exclusive when it comes in Jan !!

Thanks lads, I'm still caught in two minds though, any more things which could sway me towards it?

    Decisions, decisions, decisions :D

They offer a 120gb PS3 Slim with COD: MW2 for €299 as well if you want that option although you said you have it for the 360.

The PS3's hard drive can be easily upgraded if you need to.

To be honest, the OP already has an Xbox so this isnt a case of "why should I buy a PS3 over an Xbox" thread.

He's purely talking about whether its worth the money. In the end OP, you have to make that decision because its a question of what else you might do with that money. If it was a Ps3 versus a trip to london for the weekend in a nice hotel... its the PS3 every time. If the money is needed to buy oxygen for your aspirator... you might want to hang onto the cash :)

In terms of what you get for your cash, I think its worth it as I said, its an excellent "out of the box" experience as they say. The blue ray player is superb if you have a HD tv (I presume so)... the machine is quite nice as a unit but I dont think the MP is up to XBL standards... then again, screaming nazi-****** obsessed kids are fairly uniform accross all platforms...

If you like glorious graphics and are a games/movies fanatic I doubt you will be asking for your money back...

TBH if i were you i'd buy one just for the simple fact that on 360 vs PS3 threads you can say: "I'm not a fanboy as i own all 3 consoles, but i just wanted to say..."

    :pac:

Well I picked up the PS3 slim when it was first released and played it a good bit, but now since finishing Uncharted 2, I haven't turned it on in a couple of weeks.

I got it for €150 using the gamestop trade in thing so I don't feel like it's going to waste, however if I paid full whack I might be.

Although since most of your mates play online with a PS3, you'd probably get more use from it than I do.

So did you get the UC2/Fifa bundle in the end? You should post your PSN here if you feel like playing with some Boardsies.

May need to drop the free online service as an advantage.

It seems Sony are considering introducing a subscription model for 'premium' content and services. Whatever that would be.

Ah thats not good , sony love screwing EU customers
Japanese players :free for all content
US players : PSN still free , premium PSN 5 dollars a quarter , gives access to free games , beta's etc
Euro players : "that'll be €2 everytime you want to logon to regular PSN euroscum!!!"

I will be angry if they start charging, Sony don't want to make me angry ().

'The sky is falling, the sky is falling!'...

As has been discussed in other threads in this forum already, these subscriptions are likely to be for a games rental system for the PSP, a video magazine (like 'Qore' in the US), premium themes and avatars (which were recently introduced) and possibly MMO subscriptions/content. This is in addition to the Video Store which offers what I'm sure Sony would refer to as 'Premium content'.

Yeah I did mate, I'm delighted with it. Thanks for that, I'll have a look at that in a bit.

That would be just my luck for them to start charging for it, when I only bought a PS3 last weekend haha!

So you happy with it so far?

I'm playing UC1 at the moment which I like but is a bit short (it says I'm 50% through already?). Might be the first game I've actually finished for a while :)

I'm in this position with Assassin's Creed 2. It's been a very long time since I've stuck with a game right through (maybe Mass Effect?), but I have a good feeling about this one :)

Xtravision have a very similar deal if that's handier for you.

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if the Gamestop offer is still on?

Yeah it's class mate, thanks again for the recommendation.

I'm halfway through UC2 now, never played the first one like, there's 27 stages in UC2 though, so I'd imagine it might be something similar in UC1?

Was that the offer with the 2 Blu-Rays included with one game for €380? I noticed that offer alright but the second game, rather than the two DVD's swung it in Gamestop's favour as regards my purchase.
