Doc gave me a test?....

    Hi, all!

Would like to say first, it is not medical advice I am seeking.

I moved to the U.K recently and went to the doctor for the first time here last Friday to renew my pill prescription. That's all good.

But before I left, the doc said she was sending me for a Chlamydia test. She said it was just a precaution. Thing is, I've only ever had one sexual partner (my current OH - I am also his 1st sexual partner) and we've never had unprotected sex.

I said this to her and she said the British government was pushing these tests on people between 18-25 as it's the most common STD among that age group. But surely if I have only had one partner and have used condoms every time I don't need one?

I don't actually mind doing the test but I am just wondering if I can catch anything if I've been so careful? I have read up on the subject and nowhere mentions that having protected sex with a long term partner can result in an STD.

I'm just very confused. Apologies for the long post. Can anyone shed any light on this?

You've been careful - and so is your Doctor.

    I dont see the problem.

No, you can't have gotten it unless your boyfriend caught it off someone else.

The doctor's being cautious. Getting people to tell the truth about sexual history is notoriously difficult.

Not that the doctor doesn't believe you, but you need to remember, she has probably heard the same thing a thousand times.

It's probably just SOP for them to send you, so you may as well do it.

It's highly unlikely ye have contracted the disease, but whats the harm in doing the test?

She's just being careful. Go with it. My doctor made me have my first smear test when I was a teenager, years before I was even sexually active. It's better safe than sorry.

I agree. I'm sure there are a lot of people who have caught STDs from unfaithful partners. I'm not suggesting that your OH has been unfaithful but the doctor is just doing his/her job. Some STD can leave you infertile so it is important. I'm sure all will be fine.

    Hi, OP here.

Thanks for your responses. I feel much better now.

It's not that I have a problem taking the test. I'm going to take it just to be safe. I was just worried that I had been misinformed about how STD's are contracted. Which was unsettling because I thought I was reasonably educated in protecting myself against these dangers.

But now that I know the test result will be negative, I feel more at ease. Thank you all for your replies and confirming what I already thought. :D
