Did you have a Carrera Subway stolen?

    Hi to all...now, here's a strange one..

about two months ago, i came across the wreckage of what was once a pretty good and expensive bike- a carrera subway. No saddle, chain, brake cables, quick release spear, in pieces, and was overgrown with grass from where it had been lying a long time. It was about to go into a skip, and i said i'd take it. I did, and paid to get fixed what i could not fix myself, which was most of it.
So far so good, a nice bike for little money(repairs cost 90 euro)...yes, so far so good, untill it occured to me..possibly this bike may have been stolen. In fact, i would say, probably.
So, my conscience has got the better of me. If you once had this make and model of bike and it was stolen, or if you know someone that had one that was stolen, please contact me with the code from the bike you had. If it matches, well, i got your bike! And you can have it back.
I did have a fair idea when i got it first that it was possible it was stolen at some stage, though i tried to rationalise that in it's condition, it is worthless to anyone and it's "ok" to fix it up for myself. Fortunatly, it began to bother me, knowing that once upon a time someone paid alot of money for this bike.
Like i said,i don't know for sure. But i wouldn't be surprised. And if indeed it is stolen, i want to return it to it's rightful owner.
So...a little unusual, but there you go. It sits in my hall now, i won't use it again untill i am sure it was not stolen at any time. All posts welcome...Thanks..

In fairness if it was in bits and about to be disposed of it is more likely that bits were stolen off it and the owner abandoned it... I wouldn't worry about it too much.

If the bike is as bad as you say, I'd be worried about the quality of the work. e90 to fix up a wreck is waaaay too cheap. you would be looking at almost that in parts alone.

Oh yea dont worry about it. Owner probably has let it go. maybe just run it by the gards(although they may wanna take it off you)

Yep, mine was stolen about a month or two ago. Don't have the Code but it's probably not mine anyway. If it is mine, congrats, keep it. You got yourself a decent bike for €90 and I got an expensive lesson I'll never forget. I've since bought the 2009 version.

Indeed...for 90 euro, new saddle, new chain, spear for wheels..handle bar grips(yes, even they were missing!) but the brakes are awful...the guy said that was the best he could do, i think disc brakes weren't his speciality.

The truth be told, the full truth that is...a guy i knew, not very well, i happened to be in his house and we got to talking about bikes. I had a nice trek 3700(bought and since sold on trusty adverts) and he mentioned the carerra in his garden. I saw it, and it was in bits, said i'd pass on it. Subsequently thought on it, and said sure for nothing, it's worth seeing what it would cost to fix up.

Now, i would guess, and this is no judgement on my associate, that it is quite possible this was once stolen. How it came to be in his possesion? I have no idea, i didn't ask. The point being, where i am at in life, it doesn't sit well with me that it may be stolen. I didn't plan on growing a conscience, but here we are.

Possibly, the only other explaination, is that maybe the original owner had some debt and exchanged the bike to clear what he may have owed. It can happen in certain lifestyle choices, some might see where i am going with this. I can live with that. Free will certainly can come at a cost, and there are many expensive lessons to learn.

Subway 8 Doesnt have disc brakes. It has Nexus Internals. If they are iffy they may need to be lubed.(There is a specific grease for them from shimano), also there is a hex kinda nut that pushes springs out when you break(kinda like a clutch on a car) This nut can wear too.

The Subway 8 page says it has front and rear discs.

no, it is not the 2009 model, thats for sure. Possibly 2008.

And Kona, thanks for the info on disc breaks..but i am a pure noob in this area. I know nothing about the technical side.

I had a look at the halfords site, there are great deals on new carrera's now. I think i might buy a new one after christmas. As for the one i have, at this stage the only thing i can do is bring it to the gardai. It's the only way to know for sure. And i just won't use it if i think it is stolen.
