Rainfall up to 19th November 2009

The month of November 2009 has been very wet with many places already having one and a half to two times the normal rainfall for the whole month.

Stations at Sherkin Island and Claremorris have already had more rain than in any previous full November. This is in records going back to 1972 and 1950 respectively. It seems likely that other stations will also exceed previous records before the month is over.

Valentia Observatory has already seen 263.4mm this month. Highest ever November value is 312mm in 1931, while 2003 had 291mm and 2002 had 290mm. Indeed, at Valentia, the total rainfall for 2009 currently stands at 1879mm with the previous wettest year at 1923mm in 2002. It seems likely that 2009 will be the wettest ever.

The 19th was, in many places (but not all) the wettest day with Valentia Observatory recording 57.4mm, Cork Airport recording 51.2mm and many other places receiving in excess of 30mm. Taken alone, this was a very wet day by any standards but with the ground already saturated by heavy rain over the preceding days, the effect was made worse.
While there were some large daily falls of rain on the 19th, there are no new records in the data so far received.

Valentia Observatory had 57.4mm which was exceeded in 1984 (25 years ago) with a fall of 63.5, while 86.6mm was recorded on 1 November 1980 with a further 70.5mm on the 2nd.

Cork Airport had 51.2mm, its highest daily November fall in 18 years ( 59.3mm in 1991) and its third highest November fall on record.
