Is the UFC doing away with WEC and bringing the lighter guys onto its show?

I might have missed a bit of news.

I think it would be a smart idea.

Would be great if they did, the lighter weights are far more entertaining and fast..

I read this on a post somehere recently (can't remember where though)

But never actually saw it reported on a legit site

While I like to see the big guys slug it out the action with the lighter fighters can be more entertaining

I don't understand why the UFC doesn't bring it all under one umbrella

It would increase their exposure and allow them to stack the cards easier.

Maybe the issue is the smaller men might look for higher wages

Would be good for the WEC guys, was just reading this about their earnings:

    http://www.mmaunltd.com/news-detail.asp/NewsID/1063/wec-44-payouts.htm

im pretty sure they would get a nice payrise if got rid of WEC and just pushed them as UFC

UFC have reportedly discussed it numerous times on issues such as strengthening UFC cards and even out fairness to all the exceptional WEC fighters who should be but for the lack exposure should be multimillionaires. But they are kind tied by the seperate TV deals WEC & UFC have. Apparently Zuffa thinks WEC would be ideal for the emerging Mexican market with the smaller guys.

I personally believe they will not merge.

The UFC has done well to clearly define and establish the existing weight-classes it has.

A lot of newbies still struggle with the fighters/classes and relevant champs.

I believe the UFC is happy with it's set of 5 weightclasses.

    HOWEVER

The proper fans acknowledge the talent in the lower weight classes and will make sure they watch the Torres/Faber/Sudo's of the world.

Since the WEC has enough talent and interest to remain a stand-alone organisation it will stay as one.

To collapse the WEC would be handing that niche to Bellator IMO

Just wish it was given a bigger push , it deserves to be seen. I cant remember the last time they had a bad card

Even if you don't know their fighters, the fight's 99% of the time are more exciting than those on bigger promotions.

It will merge soon enough as part of a cost cutting excercise. Simple and good business decision.

Apparently Dana White is of the opinion that too many weight divisions make a sport hard to follow and devalues championships as there are too many champions... hence the UFC only having 5 weight categories. That the theory behind his moves anyway...

Bringing in the lighter fighters is a good thing if you ask me. But they will have to narrow the 20lb weight category gap - if you ask me with lighter fighters.

I also think he may be looking at this as there are 3 of the 5 UFC champs all nursing injuries and not able to defend their titles anytime soon.

What 20lb weight gap? The only 20 lb gap is MW-LHW, the rest in the UFC are 15ld, and below 155 they are 10lb
and as far as I'm aware, the UFC has no control over these weights as they are set by the Nevada state commission, they set 9 weight classes I believe (the only one not used by Zuffa is SHW - 265+)

    Am I missing some here.
    Brock is out,
    Machida just defended
    Silva is defending at 109
GSP will be facing Hardy next,
BJ is defending in two weeks

Is GSP injuried? And even so, I don't see who the 3 injured are?

GSP has been injured for a while

In fairness to the previous poster he did say NURSING INJURIES.

GSP is starting to train hard again after his groin problem.
Anderson Silva is coming off Elbow surgery.
Machida is on medical suspension I think.
Brock is..... well who knows. He's out.
BJ is the only one with no injuries reported.

I'd like to see the 3 WEC weight classes brought in to the UFC for the reason that we'd get a title fight at every event.

My point was in relation to the defense, Brock is out, GSP is working towards a defense soon enough (but no date)
But the other three are all defending (or defended recently). 104, 107, 109

Lesnar won't be defending anytime soon (last fighting in July, UFC100)
GSP is recovering from his last fight (last fighting in July, UFC 100)
Silva has had an injury since his last fight (last fighting in Aug, UFC 101)

My point was that if there are only 5 champions - and say for example (and to make it simple for you) - 3 were to get fairly long term injuries that could keep them out for 6+ months... then the UFC face quite a few shows without belts up for grabs...

my post was in direct relation to the question "is GSP injured"

And technically much better. Just look at some of the heavyweight fights on TUF. Ok, I know their newbies to a certain extent, but after the first round most of them are gassed and watching two drunks outside of a pub would be technically better.

Im not arsed with Belts to be honest. Its all about the fighters and fights. A belt means shag all to me....

I think YamaMotoYama means UFC winners belts than club/seminar awarded belts etc

Soooo... gay title fights haven't produced some the best fight action?
    GSP -vs- Silva?
    Hughes -vs- Trigg?
    Chuck -vs- Tito?

Generally the best fighters are involved in the best fights - and I think its fair to say that the best fighters usually hold a title. :p

Oh come on.... dont go naming good title fights for jesus sake. Do you think I never saw a good title fight!!!! Ridiculous.

All Im saying is. I dont break out the good stuff JUST cos there's a strap on the line AND many of my favourite fighters have never held titles or haven't held titles in a long time......

I bet you cant wait to see who wins TUF10..... HAHAHAA

You should try to be a stand up comedian - you are cracking me up! :D No serious you really are...

Much as I hate to agree with you you do get fantastic non-title fights... but my point was that the UFC are seriously reducing their title fight box office draw by limiting the weight categories to 5. Do you get the point now?

Off topic - I think TUF 10 is rubbish.

I "know" your point... you care about title fights.

    I don't care if there is or isn't a title fight...once there's a decent fight on!!!!
I'd rather a stacked card... then a week one with a Title Fight carrying it....

WEC just signed a new tv deal with Versus so there's definitely no immediate plans to merge them or anything like that

For those of you who don't know Setanta Ireland is starting to show WEC (or their version of UFC Unleashed at least) after the Ultimate Fighter on Sunday nights. I think its on Wednesday night also. Well worth a watch.

Just seen this on the Setanta listings...It looks to me as if some sort of deal might be done between Setanta, and WEC..Marshall Zelaznik hinted at this in an interview during UFC105 in Manchester.

    Interview is here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jydy0WJ67s

Main discussion on WEC happens about 4.20 minutes in..

So fingers crossed we might see either a WEC event on Setanta, or even a live event in Ireland, or UK.

saw this, it's called WreCage, its old fights, just like UFC Unleashed

Balls to that if they've done a deal with Setanta. I'm just waiting for TUF 10 to end so I can quit paying out €16 a month for it.

If they're doing a deal with Setanta in Ireland, then would that suggest they'll do the same thing in the UK with Five-USA? Same as the current set-up with TUF 10?

If so, I'll have to get my ariel fixed and try to pick up Five-USA on freeview. I'm right on the border so it might work out. I wasn't going to bother if it was just TUF 10 to deal with.

EDIT, WEC already have a deal for WEC in Australia so it wouldn't surprise me.
