    Hey,

just looking for a bit of advice. Myself and my girlfriend are planning a trip for April next year and are plaaning on going to Australia and New Zealand and then into Thiland, vietnam. Going to take 4 - 6 months and see as much as we can. At the moment the plan is to get a round the world ticket, First stop would be New York for a few days to visit some family and then on from there we were planning on going to Fiji for a few more days.

This would be the 1st question that I have as i hear that people are being advised about travelling to Fiji? Would anyone know if it is safe to go or should it be avoided? If not can anyone recommend where to go, as in one of the islands? And if it is to be avoided, would anyone have and good places to go instead, some said Hawaii to me, but i hear that it expensive.

The next quesiton I have would be where to next from there. The idea I had was go to New Zeland next, and work the way up from there, New Zealand, Oz and then into Asia before going home. However the only thing that has me thinking of a different route is the weather. We would like to get the best Weather we can in Oz, looking at the weather in New Zealand, it doesn't seem all the changeable through out the year. With that in mind I was thinking of going to Cairns first, working our way down along the cost and ending up in Melbourne and then head over to New Zealand.

My thinking for this would be that we would be going into Cairns in the Autum time and so the weather should be decent enough.

I may be way off the mark but any advice would be great.

    Thanks.

With regards Fiji you will have to fly into Nadi on the main island because that's where the international Airport is. I was there for a week at the start of April this year. After spending one night in a hostel close to the airport I just went out to one of the island backpacker resorts for five nights, think it was Mana Island. I spent one night back in Nadi before flying out to New Zealand. I did 6 weeks travelling around New Zealand and then flew to Sydney. I rented a Jucy Van(Cheap yet functional) and drove to Cairns over the space of about 5 weeks.

With Regards weather New Zealand was more or less the same the whole time we were there. A bit of rain every now and then and between 15-20 degrees most days. Between Sydney and Brisbane we had bad weather, lots of rain and generally miserable conditions. Lovely weather from Brisbane up though.

With a RTW ticket I don't think you can double back on yourself so going to Oz first then New Zealand then to Asia via Oz may not be possible. Ask trailfinders though you never know. If it makes your trip any easier or cheaper I would say Fiji could be skipped, especially if your going to Asia where a lot of the beaches and islands are quite similar and cheaper! Any questions let me know :)

    Hey,

thanks for the reply and the tip on Jucy, had a look there and the prices look good. That was one of the questions I meant to ask as wether it is better to hire a campervan or just get a car and use the hostels as we go.

In terms of Fiji, it wouldn't be a problem in terms of making it cheaper, it would be somewhere we would like to see, but with the travel advisory on the lonley planet website i was just wondering if it is safe enough to go.

    Thanks

    Hiya
Did similar route myself a few years back. Cairns in winter is grand, Darwin was roasting in August, the sun was so welcome after being down in Adelaide etc.
Fiji is brilliant, if you're in anyway streetwise you'll be absolutely fine. Though, I did stay in a lonely planet recommended hostel the first night in Nandi - big mistake, complete hole, go for personally/forum recommended places only till you get your bearings. I saw most of Fiji by boat and it was magic, just get out to the islands, beautiful and really cheap.

NZ to me, is a bit like a better version of Ireland. It definitely can be rainy and grey in winter, so I'd avoid it in the winter if the weather is important to you, unless of course you're in to skiing. Summer in NZ is like really really good summer days here, it's just perfect. Beaches on the east coast with their white sand will blow you away. I spent 9 months in NZ and 2 months in Oz, wish I hadn't wasted the time in Oz to be honest! NZ is just fab. Depends what you're looking for I suppose. The trip you're talking about in Oz is probably better for party getting locked on a bus and cheap hostels - good fun like, but again, depends what you're in to. I did lots of hikes, sailing and partying on boats. Just different I guess.
