I was wondering if something like this happened to someone and what the did about it??

I went to get my hair done at the salon I usually get it done at at home on Wednesday morning. I got hidden blonde hi lights and some brown in to tone down the blonde. I've been getting the hi lights for the last 4-5 years maybe...This is the second time I got the brown in all over. All was grand when I left the salon but when I was on my way home my hair started to itch....like REALLY itch. When I got home I was like some kind of mad animal scratching at my head, this lasted all through the night according to my boyfriend. He told me to wash my hair out the next morning which I did and it helped somewhat. I believed that it was an allergic reaction like contact dermatitis, so I went to the chemist and told a pharmacist about it and she had a look at my scalp. She gasped and thats when my heart sank. She told me there were blisters on the back of my neck, my ears are all raw and sore. and what I thought was a little bit of contact dermatitis on my hair line is little blisters too...its in my hair and its MAD itchy. The girl said I should kick up a fuss and get my money back.

I rang the salon in tears and the girl said that I may never be able to get my hair done again...she was asking was I on any medication. (I'm not) she said that hormones might have something to do with it? I dunno if all of this is BS because I'M VERY ANNOYED RIGHT NOW!! The salon manager is sending me up some soothing shampoos or something?

What do I do? I went down to get my hair done for my graduation which is Monday week. I guess I can count myself lucky that I didn't go closer to my graduation or this could have been worse.

What do I do? I'm so upset now. I got Cetrine Allergy tablets and Cortopin1% cream....Sorry about the wall of text. I hope someone out there can help me.

Do you mean you usually get your colour done at home, but went to a salon this time?

If so, did the hairdresser do a patch test at least 24 hours in advance? If she didn't, I would take the salon to the small claims court for damages.

No I always got my hair done at this certain salon. She girl that usually does my hair had a hospital appointment so this girl I went to school with did it.

I was only going down for the day to get my hair done. Patch test? I've never had one of those done, and I'm not usually sensitive to products. But I must be now! I'll be asking for one in future. My dad says to leave it, he was so mad when I rang him. I dunno what to do as this girl is a neighbor too :(

Are you sure they used the same type of dye they normally used on you in the past?

You can develop sensitivity to hair dye at ANY time, even if you've been using the same dye for years, it sucks! You'll have to be really careful and do a patch test next time you get your hair coloured.

They just bring out the bleach in little tubs with brushes. I wouldn't know if they were doing something different. I won't be going back to that salon again! Believe me! I don't want this again!

I wonder if there are any cheapish good salons in Dublin city center or around that area....I paid €75 for hilights and a cut. grrr!

Yeah, same thing happen to me about 2 years ago. I got really bad blisters and could not wash my hair for 2 weeks until they healed. I think it was cos the colour was left on to long. When I told the hair dresser my head was sore she told me it wasnt!!!! I kept saying it was and she told me not (pardon the pun) it was all in my head. I was getting really upset as my head felt really sore and stingy, I called my husband and the second he came into the salon she was all out with the cool water and blaming another member of staff. I was in tears and to add insult to injury my hair was a rotten colour, nothing like I had picked. Anyway she charged me 114 euro and I was to upset to get into a row about it but never went back
I have had my hair coloured many times since and it has been fine. I have never had a patch test offered to me in any salon.

Not 100% sure but I think it's the law that they have to do a patch test a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

If it's not the law, it's certainly good practice and it would ring alarm bells in my head if they didn't offer a patch test to new customers or those who haven't had their hair coloured with them in over 6 months.

 OMG! I have my graduation in a week and a half..I wanna try and curl it but I'm afraid to practice with tongs because I don't want to put any heat protector in in case it reacts with the little blisters on my head :( ..I'm gonna wash my hair with just water and condition it every second day....I really hope it helps...I put cream on my blisters and some sudo so fingers crossed it will feck off quickly! The worst thing is the top of my ear is RAW BEYOND BELIEF...its sore to rub cream on it and its like a dull achey stingy burn.... :(

Most salons do a test when they're dying someone's hair for the first time. The first time I went to a new hairdresser and asked what they'd do with my hair colour, the first thing I was asked was whether or not I'd had a test done (I hadn't) so she didn't do anything other than highlights using a colourant that didn't have bleach in it.

Do you think the hairdresser in question left the colour in for longer than usual? And did she check it regularly to see how the colour was going? If not, then perhaps you have an argument to get your money back at the very least.

I don't know how long it was supposed to be on for? It was maybe an hour or just under it? She had to go and do someone elses hair and looked at mine and got another girl to wash out my hair. I was all up in arms about it earlier, but the girl is a neighbor of mine and is friends with my mum so it would just cause a load of agro that would upset my mum (which means everyone would be upset then) its just not worth it. But I'll be sure to tell anyone to think twice about going in there...

    Hey op,

If this was the second time you had the all over colour, they wouldnt have done a patch test, but they should have done one before you had the colour done the first time.

The soothing shampoos should work, I find them great.

The salon should have asked you to come back in, each colour company will have a technician that will or can call out, they will check out your hair & scalp.

If your neighbour is employed by this salon its obviously not her fault, especially if you have had this done before they should have your card which the colour would be on. And what they said about the hormones and tablets and that are true - with any complaint you always ask this.

Are the sore spots where the blonde pieces are or the brown?

Colour should be on for 35 - 45 mins.

An hour seems a long time for the colour to be in...

the sore spots seem to be at the brown patches. the girl in the chemist said that the bleach could have reacted with the brown? I dunno if this is true?

The girl is employed by the salon. But the girl that usually does my hair acutally owns and runs the salon. I wonder should I use these shampoos as soon as I get them or should I just rinse my hair with water to let the natural oils do their thing? I saw a thread there a few days ago about not using shampoo as its better for your hair? I wonder is that true? I guess it wouldn't hurt to try?...

there was a case in the Civil Court recently - about the same thing...will try find the story.
    EDIT: 28 October 2009
    Here it is

A hair colouring that went wrong has cost a Peter Marks salon ?5,000 in
damages and as much again in legal costs.

Teenager Laura Mc Hale suffered cigarette-like burns to her scalp, Judge
Doirbhile Flanagan heard in the Circuit Civil
    court.

Barrister Sarah Berkeley said Laura, of Primrose Grove, Darndale, Dublin,
had an allergic reaction to the colourant
used by the Northside Shopping Centre salon of Peter Marks.

Ms Berkeley said that in June 2008 Laura, then 16, had attended the salon
to have her hair coloured blonde and had
not been happy with the result. She had returned and the hairdresser had
    tried to re-colour her hair.

After the second occasion she had felt a burning sensation on her scalp
following rinsing and later had to attend Dr
Furlong Mc Carthy in the Meridian Clinic for treatment.

Her scalp looked as if it had cigarette burns on it and she had been
advised not to use any shampoos or chemicals
on her hair for several weeks.

Ms Berkeley told the court Laura had been unable to comb or have anything
done with her hair for a number of
weeks until her scalp had settled down and she had felt embarrassed about
    it.

The Peter Marks Northside salon had made a settlement offer of ?5,000 with
costs and she was recommending the
    court's approval.

Judge Flanagan, approving the settlement, said the experience had been a
    traumatic one for Laura.

Legal costs in such proceedings average ?2,500 for each party.

    Ends

When it happened to me I went to the doctor and he told me not to use any shampoo on and to try not to wash it until it healed but if I really needed to, just to rinse with cool water. It sounds like the colour was on to long.

This morning it felt like I was the first person this ever happened to! Especially when I was a hyperventilating tomato on the phone to my dad!

Its so good that some people have been through this before! I'm gonna try and rinse it with some cool water...I can imagine my poor scalp is crying out for some cool water!

Wow, I thought every salon has to do a patch test the first time you get it done. All the ones I've been to have anyway. I even lied once in a salon saying I had my hair hi-lighted there before and when they couldn't find my name on the records they refused to do my hair until they did a patch test.

Oh dear...it's not actually the bleach that 99% of people have allergic reactions to. :o

OP - whether you know this girl or not is irrelevent. If she's not qualified and doesn't know how to safely colour someone's hair she should NOT be doing it.

we can develope allergies to hair dyes over time, esp all over brown, the darker the colour the stronger the allergic reaction. It happened to me, really bad. It is caused by a chemical called ppd,(p-phenylenediamine) which is in all permanent and semi-permanent colours. The only product I found that doesnt contain it is a wash in by Clairol called Loving Care, which is now being discontinued!!!
Does anyone know of any other product that does not contain ppd.
ps. the products available in health shops and the Aveda product all contain ppd
