Publicans must make some money on a shot of vodka if tesco can sell it at 20euro for a litre.

Tesco are likely making a loss, even more likely with their buying power they can get massive discounts

I think the cost price for 1L of Smirnoff is €21.09, With the amount of people they draw to the shop with these offers it's bound to be worth it to them.

I know yah, they will obviously make up the money on impulse purchases.Still tho, cant complain about that for a retail price

the duty on a litre of spirits is about €15.30 + vat which bring it to €18.50.

there's also vat on the remaining 1.50, so the total revenue for tesco on the litre of vodka is about €1.25 - out of this they have to pay for it, so my guess is a loss of about €7 per bottle

I thought that selling at below cost price was illegal?

not anymore - rules changed about 2 years ago. Supermarkets claimed that it would bring down the cost of groceries, but all it did was start an alcohol price war which is a benefit for responsible drinkers, but which is major problem for anti social behaviour and also people who have addiction problems.

Asda Enniskillen was selling 1L of Baileys for £9 last Friday. Yeah I mean a Litre bottle. limit of 3 per customer. Everyone had 3 in the trolly.

Tesco Nutgrove had southy at €20.89 today. Not great, but still significantly less than the usual €27 or so.

Excise duty is €39.25 per litre pure, so €14.72 per litre of smirnoff (37.5%). I am not sure if there is other duty on top of that?

A standard 700ml bottle is got a lot of the time for €20, so on the same price per ml a litre should normally be €28.57.

Spirits are very cheap to make, if you had a licence you could make 1L of 40% vodka for €2 and is with higher production costs than they would have. I would also wonder if manufacturers could partially take a hit too, i.e. smirnoff could have below cost selling themselves as a way to promote their product.

    Meh.

Got four 70cls of vodka for €28 literally two minutes over the border today. Buying stuff in the South is a mug's game tbh.

Litre of Glen's is I think 11stg in Sainsbury's, even when it's not on offer. It's unreal that 20 quid for a litre is considered so good.

Hope you didn't buy any petrol or diesel over the border! :D

Diesel is an average of €1.29 a litre up north and about 1.07 in the south.

Also I hope you're not thinking of moving to the Uk soon - the average €3000 council tax & €450 water charges will stick in your throat too! As will the higher paye taxes and lower wage levels.

Agreed. The only surprise to me is that more people don't shop up North.

For people who live in the south of "the South" it could cost them more to travel up. The real mugs are those who lose out overall by not calculating the REAL cost. It is just like convenience stores, some people will travel miles to Dunnes to save a few pence on a pint of milk, when it would have costed less to get it in the local shop.

Oh thank Christ, for a second I thought you were going to go about us being traitors for not supporting local shops like Tesco. :pac:

I don't know how the shops here are meant to compete. To buy 12 bottles of Smirnoff at cost it's €253.12 incl VAT from a wholesaler. That works out at €21.09 per bottle incl. VAT before you add on any mark up.

    Musgraves

On the other hand Tesco are selling this at €20 to their customers, tis good value alright.

Presumably they will cost a lot less once the reduction in excise has been taken into account. Anyone been in Tesco recently?

/Off Topic, but your sig is misleading. You should say "Free Delivery for orders over €59" instead of "Free Delivery" - it just pisses people off.

But HURRAH for cheap Vodka for the people!

€20 is not a rip off. It's considerably cheaper than the usual price in IRELAND. Jesus do you want me to start quoting the price of vodka in Spain. Cop on ffs. If saving 6 euro is worth driving to the north for you grand, I don't care. I really don't want to hear it and I'm not that tight that I'd go through the hassle.
