Are they reliable versus normal gears?

    Yes.

Tiptronic is around since 1990, invented by Porsche, and licenced to (amongst others) VAG, Mitsubishi, Peugeot.

Lots and lots of Tip's out there, some with v.big mileage. My '93 has 156k miles, and runs like a swiss watch.

    All good, imho.

The big ++, in a VAG, is no dreaded DMF to fail !

    Ode To The Motorist

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

OP, what year is the car you're going for? Are you sure it's a tiptronic and not a Multitronic? The Multitronics are some of the most unreliable autoboxes ever to be fitted to a car.

Will make sure its a tiptronic so.
Would like an Audi - budget < than 11K

I know of someone who has had all sorts of trouble with an A6 tiptronic box. Has cost thousands to try and correct and still isn't right.

Yes. So are their Tiptronic gearboxes. Their Multitronic gearboxes, on the other hand are up there with the 3.0-litre Isuzu engine in the unreliability stakes.

If it's a relatively recent car, it may well be a Multitronic, which is a CVT and notorious for giving trouble.

Im wondering should I go for an automatic if there is a greater risk with tiptronic.

A tiptronic is a normal automatic but with manual override switches, a CVT (ie Multitronic) gearbox is a different beast altogether.

    Thanks for the info.

Whats the earliest year for Tiptronic on an A4?

Some confusion here. I think the OP defines 'tiptronic' as an automatic with paddle shifters. Multitronic is Audi's name for it's automatic gearbox, some of which come with paddle shifters. Any Audi automatic before about '05 was Multitronic and should not even be considered (i.e, if you see 'Multitronic', run away fast.) The box has two points of failure, the gearbox ECU and the mechanical bits. Replacement boxes fail as well.

In other words OP, avoid automatic Audis in your price range.

Honest John's take on the 2001 model. From personal experience the model before that was very flaky indeed.

The A6 I mentioned was an older car. 2.4 petrol. May well have been multitronic, in which case my error :o

I think that's a load of bollocks in fairness. We have an A4 Cabriolet for going on three years now with it and it hasn't given trouble once. Also, you should try selling one without it and see how hard it'll be.

I'm looking at buying an a4 next year. I'm looking at 05-08 models, would I be best to just stick to manual?

I prefer manual anyway but I didn't mind getting an auto but tails of problems with them are scaring me off.

Google 'Multitronic problems' and you'll be surprised. The affected boxes are from 2000-2004. After that they changed over to the VAG DSG.

The fact that you think they changed over to DSG tells how uninformed you are, no offence.
