Rear Window security for a van?

    Hi Folks,

I've a simple enough problem. For the second time in as many months, my company van has been broken into in the basement car park of where I live. First time, over 10 grands worth of Servers/PC's etc were nicked. This time round, the brand new Citroen Nemo my boss gave me last week was broken into. Nothing much taken - just a toolbox and a few set of screwdrivers.

Since I'd rather not have this happen a third time (and the guy that pays my wages agrees!!) would anyone have ideas on rear window security for a service van? We have tried blacking the windows out - didn't work first time round. I'm reluctant to remove the windows - I like to be able to see what happening behind me when I'm driving.

I have seen vans fitted with what appear to be metal slats inside their rear door glass - are these worth it and do they work? Where would you get these fitted, and would anyone have a guesstimated cost?

    Thanks in advance!!

...tut tut....you being a techy and all............panel the windows in and........fit a rear view camera.

Speaking of which, why not put one IN the load area too - next time you'll have them on HDD ??

Heh - tempting mate. We do have CCTV, so I'm sure by tomorrow night I'll have the pleasure of watching my van being bust into again from my couch. (the beer helps).

Plating the windows is being considered, but may not be possible. The Nemo's back windows are glued on, to the outside of the back doors. Apparently, if you want plated rear doors, they have to be ordered that way.

Personally, I'd mount something with a bit more bang than CCTV inside the van for the next uninvited visitor, but apparently thats illegal. Bit of a pity that.

If you steel panel it, they'll just wreck it even further trying to get it open, trust me. It's far more a common problem for van drivers than most people realize, and in the long run the only real solution is not to leave the stuff in the back on a regular basis. Storage space is quite cheap these days and lots of companies in competition if that's a route you'd be willing to consider.

If the scum see a heavily secured van, they just think "must be really good stuff inside" and will literally tear the doors off if they have the time and space.

Blacking the windows out will have the opposite effect, they'll smash the window just to see inside, this is mindless idiots you're up against and would think nothing of it. They seem to thrive on these long dark winter months and will always target vans and commercial vehicles.

Best thing to do is clear the van out every night if that's possible, and leave the rear windows clear. If they can see there is nothing worth nicking, then they'll leave it alone.

As Savman said, if the windows are blacked out then they'll break in anyway just to see what's in.

The slats you are talking about that go on the rear windows are usually just plastic window guards. Might act as a deterrent, but if you have really nice stuff on show behind them then they'll still find a way to get in.

I had them fitted to a Caddy by Cafco in Blanchardstown - http://www.cafco.ie/

Should come in around €200 fitted. As you are local to them, maybe call up and see what they suggest?

    Folks,
    Thanks so far :)
I had figured that clearing the van out each night would be the best, but as I've no place to clear it out into (and the better half points out our apartment is not a Company Storage Depot) for now thats not an option. Unless I can persuade the boss otherwise, thats how it'll stay. Renting storagge space would be a good fix I think, and would also solve a few other logistical problems at the same time.

R.O.R - thanks for the link to the company - its practically next door, and might get a few other things fitted from them if the Boss agrees.
