I agree. I'm lead to believe that FIFA only wanted the top teams in the World Cup. So then if Ireland did the same we would be penalised.

No its just football and stuff like this has been happening for years.

But its funny how the Irish have been laughing about the English moaning over the "Hand of God" in 1988. And now its happened to them its all a conspriacy.

Also while Ireland where the better team on the night, they still missed a host of sitters and needed to score twice no matter what the french did because to be honest i couldnt see Ireland beating France in penaltys.

I agree that organising the playoffs as a seeded draw was ridiculous. Thats not even a conspiracy, thats just blatantly obvious.

In terms of the match last night, I don't think there was a conspiracy about it. As the pundits said afterwards, Anelka dove in the box when Shay Given came out. If they wanted France to win, they would have given a penalty there and then, which probably would have been the end of it anyway. I felt the referee was pretty fair. One of the linesmen should have spotted it though

The very essence of a conspiracy is a group of people perfroming a wrongful or subversive act, so what goes on in FIFA is conspiratorial by nature.
Conspiracies aren't all about aliens living in underground bases etc...
    Conspiracies are usually very obvious.
Sepp Blatter is one hell of a dodgy character and he's driving football into the ground. Henry should be ashamed of himself and its about time referees started giving cards to diving players when the rules state they should.
FIFA will be delighted with the result.

    Glazers Out!

1986. And to be fair it did happen over 20 years ago, whereas the France incident was last night.

The conspiracy talk is obviously laughable. But I'm sure Platini and co breathed a sigh of relief last night when France qualified. Won't somebody think of the advertising revenues

Agree about all the misses but not about the penalties. It would have largely been a lottery. Though of the two players who would have had the most outcome on the shoot-out, I would have preferred Given over Loris.

Does anyone know the details of having a replay? I saw someone mention earlier that there's precident laid down already, so I was wondering how binding that could be. I wouldn't call the match result a conspiracy, but the draw itself seemed dodgy enough to me (as little as I know about football), and I can well imagine that even if a replay was guaranteed that Fifa wouldn't allow it. I guess time will tell if anything comes of it.

I meant that its not like a conspiracy because of how blatant it was. No reason for the seeded draw other than to get the bigger teams through. Conspiracies by and large are secret in nature. The seeded draw wasn't very secret. They needed it. They changed the rules to fit. If it was a conspiracy, they would have had a random draw but fixed in such a way to prevent bigger teams meeting in the playoffs. Instead, they just changed the rules.

Agreed. Video referees have to be brought in after this. It shouldn't take something like this for video referees to be introduced, in this day and age, and especially when its already used to great effect in rugby, there is no excuse for this not to be implemented for big games at least
