Job seekers benefit and rent allowance

Hi, I'm 24 years old and live with my parents and currently receive JSB.

My question is - I want to move out but don't know if I qualify for rent allowance. Both my parents are working, and if it's assessed on their means I won't qualify.

I'm only entitled to another 6mths or so of JSB. I dont qualify for JSA at the moment, but hope that if I'm living alone, I will qualify once my JBA runs out. I have personal reasons too as to why I can't live at home anymore.

Can anyone tell me where I stand, can I go to the dole office, explain that I want to move out and apply - will I qualify and how do you do this?

In order to get Rent Supplement from the HSE you need to have been
living in private rented accommodation for 6 months (183 days) out of the last 12 months and have only a social welfare payment and/or HSE payment as income.

So I'd have to move out, whilst on welfare, and use that income to pay rent for six months, before I'd be entitled to relief???

The rent supplement is primarily there to help those who suffered an unexpected loss of income and, as a result, are unable to pay to keep the existing roof over the heads.

But, that said, if you are in a living situation where you are feeling unsafe or in distress you should go to the Community Welfare Office and put your case. They will certainly give you a fair hearing and should be able to resource someway to ease that situation.
