Interesting problem: Fedora 12 and openSUSE 11 will only connect to fedoraproject.org

19-11-2009 1:56pmHeres an interesting problem to tickle your brains! Im using Ubuntu at the moment but decided to install openSUSE and Fedora to see what they're like. When I launch Firefox in Fedora I can only connect to fedoraproject.org. I can navigate around the site, and even change the language so I'm definitely connecting to a server. However I cannot reach any other site Ive tried such as Google. Ive also done some updates on Fedora which required Internet connection fine.
Then when I load openSUSE I get exactly the same problem! Can only load fedoraproject.org!!
I did a bit of searching and the closest I came to a solution involved editing IPv6 settings. However in Fedora IPv6 is ignored by default and openSUSE connection settings doesn't even mention IPv6.
Any ideas greatly appreciated
Note: Internet works fine in Debian.Tagged:0

Hello, was glad to recognise your problem
Recently installed fedora 14 and the only sites I can access with the firefox browser are ones such as fedoraproject.org and others related to the distro which were already entered onto the browser with the installation of fedora. Amasingly these sites work but nothing else google or anything will. It is obvious that the internet services are functioning but are limited. I have posted the problem on linuxquestions.org too (username Siopa) and already have had reply but no fix yet. Will keep looking, hope you find solution.0 -
Can you ping anything apart from fedoraproject?
What error do you get when you try to connect to any other site?
I would check DNS settings.0 -
Thank you gerryk
With this fedora machine I can download applications and games which install fine too so the network connections have got to be ok. I use DHCP and it seems to work so I didnt enter any DNS addresses. I had to guess on settings like IPv4 and IPv6. I'm going to yum install opera or lynx to see if they work.
Here is information from Network Manager window:

Again any help / suggestions / explenations are welcome0 -
Just on the off-chance that it's not a typo, the IP address is badly formed - colon instead of dot.IP Address: 192:168.1.102
Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Route: 192.168.1.254
Primary DNS: 192.168.1.254
Otherwise, try changing the primary DNS to 208.67.222.222 and see what happens.0 -
I gave up on Fedora due to the ridiculous permission settins. havent used it in over a year. This leads me to wonder if the firewall is configured only to allow HTTP in from that site. Can you try it with firewall disabled and see if that solves the problem. Then you will know that it the issue and you need to amend the firewall. Is ufw installed (uncomplicated firewall). If not, try download it try man ufw in terminal. if you get results then its installed so sudo(or whatever for Fedora) ufw disable0

I gave up Fedora because of this problem..
I switched to Debian...Alot better imo0 -
Well, it is resolving
[root@HOME etc]# ping linuxquestions.org
PING linuxquestions.org (75.126.162.205) 56(84) bytes of data.
Can you:
telnet 75.126.162.205 80
or even:
telnet www.google.com 80
and to go further (purely out of interest):
telnet www.google.com 443
Try using lynx (command line browser if so... to rule out if it somehow browser related?0 -
Siopa
I posted in this thread as Siopa (lost password for Siopa)
Didnt change much.
All I did was enter primary and secondary DNS addressed (just one might have done) in menu accessed from NetworkManager icon (right click, edit connections, IPv4 tab) Here I selected "Automatic (DHCP) addresses only" and below that I entered my two DNS addresses from my ISP (mines Eircom 213.94.190.194 and 213.94.190.236) but these two other ones work too 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222, no apparent difference and the latter required no additional ISP subscription. Then save giving root password. Now back to Network Manager icon, left click, "Disconnect" then reconnect. Agus sin é.
My /etc.resolv.conf file now is
search 213.94.190.236
nameserver 213.94.190.194
Thanks again, hope it is useful0
