Spare key and fob

    Hi there,
I'm looking to get a spare key and fob for my 00 new shape transit. I've read before that the price from a main dealer is crazy so as it's just to have a spare, and I haven't lost the original or anything, I can wait for long shipping times etc from overseas.

Now I've seen a used fob for under €20 on ebay and I also see what looks like the transit key for about €2.50 delivered here (the mondeo one in the top right corner): http://www.dealextreme.com/products.dx/category.714~search.ford

Does anyone know if this will do the job at all?

    Any feedback appreciated :)

I'd imagine you'll need to find someone to program the key and they'd probably be keen you buy the key off them as well..

Try these guys and see what they can do:

I bookmarked it as someone recommended it ages ago but can't vouch for them myself.

Thanks for the reply. I Think it's easy enough to program, read on another forum that all you do is turn key to 2nd position 7 times and press button, seemed to work for the guy it was suggested to so I don't think that should be a problem :)

    Ah OK I see..

Some need special equipment to code keys

Sure buy the key off deal extreme (i've used them many times) an

worst case scenario your out 2.50 and 7euro or so for a locksmith to cut the key

EDIT: The Key on Dealextreme is only a blank key quite from user:

    Looks like original.
I own one - there isn't chip - but you can use old from your previous key.

but you can use old from your previous key.
Defeats the purpose as then you have no functional spare ;)

That's for programming the remote, you still need to get the immobiliser coded to the vehicle.

    Aye:confused:

I'm a bit lost from the last few replies. Have no real experience with these electronic door lockers, I'm used to the key in door and turn ones.

So getting the key from dealextreme and getting it cut, then getting the fob from ebay and doing the engine turning thing won't be enough? What else has to be done?

    :o

AFAIK, the key needs to be coded, like ROR says, to the immobiliser. I think only a Main Ford dealer can do it, for obvious reasons.

Key would open the vehicle, fob would open the vehicle, but unless you get the key coded to the immobiliser in the vehicle, it wouldn't start the van.

As far as I know, the transit doesn't have an immobiliser and the fob only opens the door anyway:confused: The key that starts the van has nothing special on it I don't think?

Does it look like this, or is the blue bit missing? I've also seen Red bits there, and possibly green.

    The Transit has an immobiliser.....

    AS ROR said,

    Cut key to open door,
    Code key to start engine...

Yep, has the blue bit alright. Is there something special in that?

Ah jaysus, you learn something new every day! So the key I get from dealextreme will have to be programmed by Ford themselves and then the key fob will just have to do the engine turn 7 time thingy?

Any idea what Ford will charge the privilege? As I said, it's just to have a spare there. It's not currently needed to drive the van or urgent ;)

hey cormie the remote is progammed by turning the ignition on and aoff a few times but the key has to be coded, and the key you will order will be a blank with no code or the teeth wont be cut so its pretty useless if you pick up a key blank spin past and i,ll programme it for you,

    not true

my wife lost keys to her focus and these guys came out cut keys and progammed them at the car. ford in airside told me that no one could do the job apart from them and they wanted me to get the car to them. it took about 1/2 hour to get it done at the car.

The key from Deal extreme (according to a user who bought one) is chipless. It's basically a blank you can transfer a chip from an older key.

Thanks for clearing all that up everyone! ford_jedi, I'll definitely pop into you anyway, have to talk about that steering knuckle, guy in ford parts said I need the whole shaft at about €270 that the knuckle is attached to it and you can't get it separate  He gave me a print out and everything of the part.

So the one I linked to for $3 says it's just the casing, then there are two more, at about $10, a 4D transponder: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16634 and then a 4c: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16633

I think they both have chips? But which is for my 00 transit I wonder:confused:

busta hyman which bit isnt true that that keys do have to to be programmed?read your own reply the came out cut and programmed the keys, this dosent have to be done in ford but your regular joe cant do it.thats why ford say it has to be done by them or someone with the nessasary hard ware to do the job.and alot of good locksmiths worth there salt all have the nessary computer equipment to do the job.

Would anyone know about the above? If the $10 keys have the right chip and if so, would it be the 4d or the 4c and how could I tell? Any feedback appreciated :)

Think I'll just take a gamble and hope one of the keys off dealextreme works, 4c or 4d  and then just keep an eye for a fob going cheap on ebay!
