Any particular reason you want to start a new club rather than join one of the many existing ones in Dublin?

There isn't really a lot of choice in this area. AFAIK the nearest club is LCRC (Lucan), of which I am a fairly new member.

Someone who wants to do something local outside of LCRC for whatever reason doesn't have any nearby alternatives, so would have little choice but to start up something new; I can understand why such a person might not want to go into a full justification of "why not Lucan?" on a public forum, because however you paint the picture it's going to look like a criticism (implicit or explicit) of LCRC.

    Choice is good. :)

Just asking a question, all seems to be pretty top secret, no information to be released in public, email for more details, need to know basis only.

    Are you a cycling ninja?

As for the locations, both my own club (Orwell) and Lucan race in a league that alternates between the Blessington lakes and Batterstown so specific location wouldn't seem to make so much difference. Although we are "based" in Dundrum the faster training spins leave from the Phoenix Park. That is just to take one example. More than one member in Blanchardstown too.

One of the reasons I would post would be that I only started racing this year myself and found the club league invaluable for learning the ropes, rather than just jumping in to open racing (did two at the start of the season and found them utterly terrifying.) You wouldn't have this infrastructure with a new club.

    Never heard of them.

    (googles)

Ah yes, so they are. Training spins starting from Finglas, about 9km away from me.

@Blorg: didn't know fast Orwell spins left from Phoenix Park. I might defect...

That's one of the reasons I'm hoping to get faster. I'm not yet sure how fast fast is, but have yet to find myself struggling on a club spin.

It is amazing that there is no established club in D15, but proximity wouldn't be my primary criteria. Openness, friendliness, and the chance to learn from more experienced riders keen to share their insights would come higher, and on that basis this thread fails. Sorry OP.

Doesn't this imply that you're already fast? or are you just brushing up your group riding technique before rolling with the fast lads?

Well I was in the fastest group leaving from Dundrum last weekend and was told that, while it was billed as "medium-fast", it was about as fast as the "fast" group usually goes, but slightly less organised and maybe with a few more occasions where the pace eased for no apparent reason. It was grand, suited me very well. I'm still not super-confident in my group skills yet though.

No matter how fast you are there is always someone faster.

It was just a question, you seem to be very secretive and defensive.

I suspect many new to racing might be better served by an existing club for the reasons I outlined- principally that throwing yourself in to open racing may not be the best way to start. I don't doubt it is possible but maybe not ideal when there are leagues well handicapped with smaller bunches.

Your point about training times is interesting, what did you have in mind?

If you gave more details of the idea behind this new club, it may well be a good idea and there may well be interest.

Most clubs welcome "visitors" from other clubs too, you may well get people otherwise affiliated interested in what you are doing.

OP - I'm curious... how many people have shown interest in joining your "club"? With your winning personality I'm sure you've been inundated with emails. Right?

Wait, I bet that's a secret too, isn't it? The first rule of mystery cycling club is "You do not talk about mystery cycling club!".

The second rule is "No upper-case letters!!"

Odd. Most of the riders in my club train on their own or in small groups. There are large group rides at the weekends which some show up for and some don't. Have you been thrown out of a club or stormed off in a huff ?

Anyway, good luck with it. I wouldn't criticise anyone for showing a bit of initative.

I am intrigued. The approach is unorthadox, but has certainly peaked my interest. I think that an area the size of Blanch/D15, could probably do with a club - it is one of the largest population densities areas in the country.

I am an antagonistic old bugger, so this highly secretive approach has piqued my interest. I wont divulge my email to a stanger however. But I may PM you.

Best of luck with the new club.
