Cyfac are also French although they are a small manufacturer that I am sure would not support the ejection of a small team due to blatant cheating... presuming that is what this is about :)

Monsieur Henry did look very remorseful after the final whistle - I am sure you will eventually find it in yourselves to forgive him:D

not that I've ever foregiven him for all the goals he scored against Man U, or his contribution to a miserable evening I spent in Rome last May

Because now I can enjoy the World Cup in peace without having to endure the national hysteria that comes with Ireland's participation in it.

Out of curiousity do you feel the same about all Irish sporting teams/people? Would you like the Ireland rugby team not to play in the six nations? Or the Irish cyclists not to ride the tour?

Granted agree the media and people can go over the top, but think it would hold more interest if we were there.

It's not just the media, it's the entire country that goes OTT. The whole Saipan thing left me wanting to stab myself in the head.

It's one thing to support a team or a particular athlete. It's quite another when it becomes the de facto topic of every single conversation.

I've begun to find partisanship in sport exceedingly tedious. It's ruining rugby at the moment too. The whole Munster vs. Leinster sniping is childish and wearing.

Well I am proud to (now) live in a country which can send its fans abroad without the fear that violence will break out if the team loses.

Last night was a fine performance, and I feel robbed of enjoying the possibility of more of the same next summer.

oh bugger, I'm typing this whilst eating a croissant

To be fair the Saipan thing took on a completely different look with Roy leaving and that was a large part of the coverage, air time and conversations. This time you wouldn't have had that (I assume) so think it would have focused on the football more.

News topic of the day will often be the de facto topic of conversation especially if it is something that is as widely watched and followed as the country in a world cup, thats life, it's what is on a persons mind at the time. Granted there are many things that are talked about which I find wearing at this point, the whole Andy Reid situation for example.

Do you feel as strongly about people talking about the weather which what most people will mention at some point in a converstaion?

If you go to any sports game/event whether it be soccer, rugby, the RAS surely it is partisanship that gives the atmosphere to the event, if everyone sat there quietly, well there wouldn't be much point in going, its the cheering, the shouting that gives the event it's passion and atmosphere.

With regards to Leinster and Munster I agree to an extent and from the Irish point of view it's not good. But again that is sport, you have two teams who are now playing at a very high level and unfortunately you have that with every derby, the fact that the Irish team is made up of mainly players from the two teams makes it hard for the Irish management and hence they deserve a lot of credit. But thats straying from my point, it's the passion of the fans that helps to make a sport what it is, it sometimes is way over the top and total biased but thats sport!

@Tonto. I agree with you on the hysteria. But sport without partisanship loses meaning. Sport is our gladitorialism.

I think that the most popular sports are becoming very tedious due to over exposure.
I think you are wrong on Munster Leinster thing in that haz peaked and passed. Eugbyi is dying due to rules and overexposure Imho.
Having been fanatical about rugby you couldn't pay me now to go to a game.

The sports hysteria you speak of is unfortunately just another part of the dumbing down of society by media. Just like big brother, come dancing etc.

Ireland in the World Cup is like being at the barbers 24 hours a day, when the same topic of conversation is done over and over. Got any holidays planned? Are you going out at the weekend? Dreadful weather isn't it?

I guess I'm talking about excessive partisanship rather than partisanship per se, when it goes from cheering on your team to a national obsession comparable to the X Factor, when supporting your team means rubbing up rival supporters in a manner you last saw in the school yard and where your notion of identity as a sports fan is fuelled by the marketing campaign of a bank or a brewery. It's a hobby, a pastime, a game. It's not "in your blood" You're not "born into it".

Agreed but tbh I am finding it hard to follow 'serious' media, its not that its all doom and gloom its that nothing is being done about the mess. See today's times? central bank is calling for a lift on the wage cap of bank officials... ffs that was only brought in a few weeks ago:mad:

Anyway what i'm saying is that matt cooper etc is just the same crap each day and if someone tries to address it they get shot down by the powers that be thus I am fining myself not listening to the radio anymore. I find it much easier to listen to people spouting about 'Jedward' than real world events. So while yes mass hysteria around Irish sport is media created hype, its better than the constant drone of the the state of the nation, we need mindless distractions sometimes just to let off the pressure...

why else do people post here?????
    :D

Stephen Ireland wouldn't have played anyway he has stated that he does not want to play for Ireland again. As for the other players it wouldn't be near as big. (I would hope.)

I tend not to talk in a barbers because of the above so granted I see your point but it would be a side effect I'd be happy to live with and certainly would prefer to see them there and put up with that.

Comparing sport to the X Factor is a step too far!!

But having been to all the home Ireland games I saw the way the support changed through the campaign, where for a number of matches the crowd was more interested in watching the crowd "stand up for the boys in green" or watch the latest mexican wave! To the French match where the hairs on the back of your neck would stand up at times, that is genuine support in my opinion, biased but genuine! It was the first time I saw and an atmosphere like that in Croke Park for a game other than a GAA one (have been to a number of the rugby ones but not all) where you don't have the same marketing presence but you do have raw and genuine support!
It can be more than a past time and a sport for a lot of people, not saying it's in your blood or any such thing but certainly can genuinely mean a lot to people.
