You will be given alot of anaesthetic so dont worry about pain, you might suffer alot of sensitivty after for a week or so. A good idea if this happens is to use sensodyne for this period. Also mention to the dentist that you have TMJ if they dont already know, so can be given time to rest during treatment.

I've just been diagnosed with periodontitis after having one tooth extracted and finding out that a few other teeth are loose due to my gum or the bone being weak. I'm just wondering if it's better and/or cheaper and/or more expensive to try the holistic dentistry/periodontal route. There's a holistic dentist in Westport - the Ish Sko Centre, I think it's called. Has anyone gone to that centre, or maybe another holistic dentist? If so, what did they think?

I know it's going to be expensive either way, but I'm still not sure which way would be the best way to treat this. My own dentist suggested a supposedly well known and very established periodontist in Galway - Tiernan O'Brien, I think his name is. Anyone heard of him or have gone to him/his clinic? Thanks for any info or advice you can offer.

perio treatment begins at home. i've no idea what someone who calls themselves a holistic dentist can offer you. as with all alternative medicine, if it's proven to work then it becomes maindstream.
different specialists have different goals when it comes to perio treatment, but if the tooth is still there, with no sign of inflammation or pain, even with all the recession in the world, it can be deemed successful.
you just need to be as thorough as possible with your cleaning.

Thanks very much for your advice. Much appreciated. Will definitely be taking a more pro-active approach to this before taking any further drastic and/or expensive decisions...i.e. much more cleaning/brushing, flossing, etc. Thanks again.
