Just got the email from SU President Eoin Hayes:
    • The strike has been called for Tuesday, 24th November 2009.
    • It is to last for a 24hr period, only.
    • There will more than likely be picket lines on the entrances to the University by unionised University staff.
    • The University is deliberating as to how much services may be provided on the day, if any, including the Library and lectures.
    • It has currently NOT yet been officially confirmed by the University whether or not it is closing. We should know shortly.

What do the UCCers think? Obviously most will be happy with a day off, it would be handy though if the Uni remains open for the Library etc.

I suppose general discussion on it is not the remit of this forum. Saying that UCC itself would be better off if wages were rationalized as the budget would be easier to manage.

Was intending to find some pickets to cross in any case :pac:

I've heard that Security are going on strike as well, so the college can't open.

I've had at least one lecturer say she's going to pass the picket line, so my respect for her has shot up.

It's not like the strikes are going to do anything.

I actually want to go to college. We all paid €1650 for fees, and I don't want to see them wasted by having days off like this.

Hrrrm, I wonder what the reaction would be to writing in for your €4.52 back for the day. Which, given you get library access and all that for a full year is what €1650 is when divided by 365.

Are you kidding the country is going to save €31,000,000 in saved wages as a result of the one day strike by the public sector.

Strike away, it'll further turn the public against them, they'll achieve nothing and we save a fortune.

I'll be interested to see how of the 2000 UCC employees many picket if its raining.

I asked one of my Tueday lecturers if there would be a class next week, and he said that he plans on giving a lecture, and that the only thing that will stop him is if he physically can't get into the college.

In other news, no college on Tuesday means that everyones German presentation is put back a week, so I'll no longer have to give a talk on "Life in the GDR", the day after I get back from Madrid. :D

Just walk in via the Honan. Its illegal to place a picket on church grounds.

Ah Christ. I don't mind about the lectures being cancelled etc. but if the Library close I'm screwed, it's the only place where I can study and do work with books on hand. Balls.

I couldn't care less about the strikes unless the library is closed. Some of us are ****ing busy.

One of my lecturers was talking about the strike suring the week, basically saying it was pointless and also that the UCC adminstration would be delighted, as it saves them thousands of euros.

The strike in UCC is being called off, what with the catastrophic flood and all. Not the best PR

Is Tuesdays strike being called off or just postponed to help out with the flood damage?

Pretty sure its cancelled. Would be stupid to have just a strike in Cork later on. Saying that, it looks likely the unions will be striking after the Budget so I think there'll be another one fairly soon.

Will the strike next Thursday be going ahead?

A strike on Thursday week would be FANTASTIC. I'm off to Madrid that morning and was uncomfortable missing yet another full day of college. Fingers crossed.

I have an English poetry essay due that day.

Don't you just love when things just work out? :D

Ah I didn't think of what it would mean for college. I'll miss one lecture; History. Crap. Study day so.

People,It's not guaranteed yet!!Be patient they might resolve this one :)

Yes, there is indeed a good chance that the public sector will decide that they are in fact happier with less money. They can find comfort and solace in each other.. perhaps.

    Yes, studing.

Studing - a little known verb of Asian decent. Commonly mistaken for a type of fermented cognac, Studing is actually the name given to the action of placing the cursor over a certain link for a prolonged period of time.
