From what it seems the quite a number of students in my course are now working on their own laptops in labs instead of the DIT computers due to this the virtual desktop solution the technicians have imposed in the labs. Is this the same in your year / course?

What is the case in your labs? 11 votes

I use a laptop instead, and many others use their laptops instead of DIT computers.

    Laptop

I like having my own system, I know where everything is, there is no crap running that I dont want and after using vista and 7 for a while, I really cant use XP

Its an IT college and W7 was launched in the college and the labs still run XP

Macbook Pro with VMware for situations where/if I need Windows or Linux (yet to happen).

I only use the labs when we're forced to download files from distrib. Awful systems in the labs in a college that calls itself an institute of technology

    Where's the option for both?
I'd use my netbook in lectures and sometimes in the library, but the wireless is woeful and is no where near reliable enough so i use the labs too. That and working on programming assignments can be handy in a lab with other people in the same class.

Laptop in class computers outside. Depends which lab. My laptop is pretty crappy though. I normally wouldn't use the labs for anything serious. Just email and some music. Plus the fact that the wifi is a bit dodgy.

I use my netbook sometimes, but mostly just work on the DIT pc's
because most applications such as PutTTy and firefox are on the
galway server. Performance seems quite stable actually...

To get around restrictions, use a portable VirtualBox instance
running from a usb stick. Works like a charm.
