It's a horribly tough choice to make because of all the different genres...

In fact, the three highlighted above could easily make it into my top 5... top 10 would be easier, lol.

Forgot about Doves, it's been a good year for albums. I'd a lot more to filter through, very hard to widdle it down.

It's been ok, but nothing more than that.

Lots of decent records but I'm hard pushed to pick one that really blew me away and that I can see myself listening to regularly a few years from now

not sure about that, it was available as a free download in March, and its supposedly available on CD in HMV now (doesn't seem to be on iTunes though) - this is "Witchazel" I'm talking about btw...

He has released three albums: Jackpot in 1995, Opium in 2005 and Witchazel in 2009

Might as well put this up while I'm here. A top 20 in alphabetical order...

    Ambivalence Avenue – Bibio

    Gorgeous Soul/Funk/Electronic.

    Pizza Hero – Boogie Boarder

    Fantastic, mainly Instrumental Surf-Rock.

Everything's Good Ugly – Che Grand

    Soulful Hip-Hop.

Strange Journey Vol. 2 – Cunninlynguists

Independent Hip-Hop. By far their strongest release since since APOS, has a tough, hardcore edge.

    This Ain't A Mixtape – Curren$y

Laidback, summertime and consistently well produced Rap.

    Farm – Dinosaur Jr.

    Heavy Noise/Rock.

    Landscapes – Ducktails

Hazy, laidback Electronic/Pysch I've seen it described as 'amatuerish', but in a very endearing way.

Dark Night Of The Soul – Dangermouse & Sparklehorse

    Dusty, Pyschedelic Pop/Folk/Rock.

    Monster Head Room – Ganglians

Lush Pysch/Garage, with gorgeous vocals, reverb and a little noise.

Take My Breath Away – Gui Boratto

    Often stunning Ambient House.

    Butter – Hudson Mohawke

Unique 80's sounding Electronic, heavy on the synths. Very much a hate it or love it kind of release.

Opus Of Love – Kan Kick

Easy to listen to positive Instrumental Hip-Hop.

Invisible Girl – King Khan & BBQ Show

Proper lo-fi Rock, with great hooks and vocals.

My World – Lee Fields & The Expressions

    Soul/R'n'B.

    Devil's Halo - Me'Shell NdegéOcello

    Sparse Folk/Soul

    Dirty Genes – Mojoe

    Southern Soul/Hip-Hop

Hu Hu Hu – Natalia Lafourcade

Peruvian Soul/Pop/Folk. More gorgeous female vocals.

    I Blame You – Obits

    Consistent mature Rock/Pop.

Dr No's Ethiopium – Oh No

Instrumental Hip-Hop made completely Ethiopian samples.

Ineffable Mysteries From Shpongleland – Shpongle

    Banging expertly made Electronic.

Think you're getting Daisy mixed up with the two brilliant albums that preceded it. I have never been more let down

I would agree that The Devil and God Are Raging Inside of Me is a far better album[and remains one of my favourite albums] and , intitially I too was greatly let down by Daisy, every re-listen to it , it starts to sound amazing. Its simply incredibly how Jesse's songwriting has come; to think it all started with Your Favourite Weapon is crazy.

I have relistened to it a few times and while it gets better it's still a 3 star album. The two before were easy 5 stars

Sad to see only 1 mention of Ian Brown, without a doubt my album of 2009

Wasn't impressed with his latest... most of his solo stuff since the Roses has been pretty woeful, bar the occassional track like FEAR, Keep What Ya Got, etc

    Plus he's a wife-beating ass

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,584 ✭✭✭✭Creamy Goodness

    ian brown is a plank.
biffy clyro - although a good album still needs time to grow it's only been out a week and a bit.

    mine in no order

    the antlers - hospice.
we were promised jetpacks - these four walls.
    sucioperro - pain agency.
    marmaduke duke - duke pandemonium.
manchester orchestra - mean everything to nothing

I thought it was his best release post-Roses tbh. Some absolute quality on the album. Definitely up there with Solarized.

I Genuinely think George Hooks christmas album would have made all your lists if it was out yet!!

But on topic, biffy clyro's album is pretty good after listening a few times, and Paulo nutini's new one is better than i was expecting.

No idea what my 5 favourites are yet but top of the list will be Julian Casablancas - Phrazes For The Young

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 83 ✭✭Taz86

    Humbug - Arctic Monkeys
    Wild Young Hearts - Noisettes
    XX - The XX
Journal for Plague Lovers - Manics
Travelling like the light - VV Brown

I was rather let down by Moz and Jarv this year but no harm they have a reserved place in my heart and head.
I find that Mr Turner is still a great lyricist and singer.
Saw the Noisettes at the start of October. Great musicians and great singer. Pity about the lyrics ;) I like 'em
The XX leave my heart and head feeling heavy and not too sure that the world is a nice place but I like 'em for that honesty. Luv the dude, Jamie, mucking about with percussion sounds...
The Manics - what can I say? Those boys persistently throw up stuff that makes life worthwhile. Gig in the Olympia was ****ing fantastic.
VV Brown - come to Ireland missus. We want you. (she did Oxegen but we need a solo gig. Sort of similar to Noisettes)

    The Dead Weather - Horehound
Them Crooked Vultures - Them Crooked Vultures

That is all I can think of... I don't think I could pick just 5.

Off the top of my head:

    Cadence Weapon: AfterParty Babies
    White Denim - Fits
    Toddla T - Skanky Skank
    Dirty Projectors - Bitte Orca
    the xx

Honourable mentions go to: Greenday - 21st Century Breakdown (just because their o2 concert was so good), isis - Wavering Radiant (Amazing gig in the music centre), Gossip - Music for Men, Asobi Seksu - Citrus (I know this is 2 years old but I only discovered it this year, it's my new favourite album of all time and would be in the top 5 if it had been brought out this year. Can't find their new album anywhere apart from amazon), Kylesa - Static Tensions, Sonic Youth - The eternal

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,465 ✭✭✭SM01

Too broke this year to spend much money on albums so will just put down my no. 1 which was The Horrors - Primary Colours. Looking forward to getting my hands on a lot of those mentioned in this thread though
