Restarting 40k

    Hey gents,

I used to be a big 40k player, but the last 2 years turned into a hectic mess of, um, stuff. So, I'm a bit off. God only knows what behind in. Even lost a ton of minis!

So basically im treating this as being a new player going in with an understanding of the rules. I'm still on the fence with army selection. I have some guard / marines lying around somewhere but I cant bring myself to field a force of power armoured peter perfects with non-functional genitalia. Space wolves maybe...

My Guard now, I love them, but I never really learned how to play properly. My lists were a mess. The only game I won was when I managed to tie up SM bikers in close combat for most of a game with 3 sentinels while my Russ got a ton of lucky battlecannon hits.

The Tau look cool, but I cant get behind the lore. At all.
Orks, well, good bit of fun. The whole Ork "thing" reminds of shouting at the telly during a match in the pub :)
Eldar? Again, look cool. But, cant get behind them. I think i'd purposely skip shooting phases and stand still just to watch them get butchered.

Im an Imperial I guess. Praise the chair!

Afaik I have the latest SM codex and rulebook, but my guard one is behind. this all came about when I picked up the latest White Dwarf while shopping and went "Ooh".

This is a plea for advice on what to buy, army selection, how to play well (Seriously, I used to line up my guard like a napoleonic army because I thought it looked cool, cover saves be damned...)

The new guard dex is a big old change.
Some great new models and some very strong lists. Also some Expensive army build options.

I'd suggest buying the new Guard codex. I don't know how much the codexs cost, but they're fairly reasonable - after all, GW want you to buy them so you'll buy more models.

If you're in dublin you can get it in Gamersworld on Jervis street. It'll be slightly cheaper than in a GW store, and the owner, Martin, is always willing to give advice on armies. He's also not that pushy, so it won't be an annoying hard-sell disguised as advice.

I'd suggest coming in on a Wednesday night, after 7:00pm and talk to the Dublin Games Guild. There's a LOT of 40k players in that - a higher proportion than in the UGG guys who run the Tuesday nights.

They'll also give you advice and you can have a look round, or organise a game for another wednesday if you're interested.

If you're not in Dublin, then, emm, nothing to see here...

Thanks for the response guys :)

Im in Laois (dead end for the hobby...) so ill probably end up getting the dex in the mail. I hear that stormies have ap3 guns? I sense a beardy list warming up in my head :P
And I think theres a new Space Wolf dex coming shortly or something to that effect, might be another idea. I woke up sick physically (flu) and mentally (Henri...) so I spent all morning browsing the GW site with a cup of tea and box of panadol, haha. I'll probably write up some SM lists or something and check the new guard stuff out.

Im not averse to getting a bus / train up the odd weekend for a game though.

Again, thanks. I'll hammer on and give ye an update when my heads in order and I decide wheter to bless a bolter or charge a las cell :)

The new Space Wolves codex was out a month back or so.

Indeed, the next codex that looks to be heading our way is the Tyrinids codex in Jan.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one, GW sent the wrong PDF to the printers.

So what they currently have is thousands of copies of the old codex, but with the new codex cover.

    That's the Dark Eldar codex.

Laois huh. You poor <censored by the inquisition>

I think Models World are doing a doubles tournament in Dec. That would be a great way to get back into the game.

If you want to come to Cork and have some drinking with the occassional game of 40K come to Warpcon in Jan :)

i would advise staying away from the spacewolfs unless your really into the chapter concept and will play with honour(honour being a big thing for the space wolfs hence the destruction of prospro).
iv seen the new codex and find that given to the wrong hands they can be the beardyest army yet (space marines mounted on giant wolfs for e.g.), there are some cool things with the new space wolfs like the saga's you give your characters basicly (correct me if im wrong) you give you character a boost or ability and they are then supposed to perform a heroic deed in order to fufill said saga e.g. killing a monsturious creature in c.c.

    Thanks gents.
I've come a bit closer to army selection, if you can call this close:
    Wolves / Guard / Orks. Guess I'll roll a D3 :P

I'll do my level best to get to some kinda con next year :)

Well I play 2 of those 3 so all I can say is that you have good taste ;)

I recommend getting your hands on Armybuilder as well. It's great for playing with army builds

Update: I got my hands on the new Wolf / Guard Codex, and i'll probably get the Ork one down the line, heh. Couldent decide so I said i'd roll a D6 to decide which force to collect first, and lo and behold the wolves popped up! Not to bad because I kinda want to try my hand at converting some thunderwolf cavalry. Found this on the Bolter and Chainsword, its a high elf white lion and some green stuff :

Oh and Murphy, thank you for the link. Thats a dead handy program :D

Regarding tourneys and cons - given the sorry state of my finances and losing the 'oul job, I probably wont have a decent force until say feb.

Thanks again gentlemen, The emporer protects.

Glad to hear you like AB. I'm after becoming dependant on it ;)

Sorry to hear about he finances and job stuff. I've had a few very dodgy months myself recently and it does suck when that stuff goes wonk.

If you want to get a feel for tournaments and see some armies being played Warpcon welcomes careful spectators ;)

    Thank you mate.
Im in a slightly hyper mood - I did some digging in the attic and managed to find a dreadnought and some marines / scouts. Get some wolf sprues and green stuff (also found the mangled remains of an oooold rhino, amazing to see how far the models have come along, heh) get my convert on, I think I found some grey hunters :D

As to warpcon, I dont really have a way of travelling around freely at the moment. I'll see how things fair come Jan. I remember talk of other gaming cons like gaelcon atc from the day. I may try and link up with a midlands club or get crazy and find some laois people for one. To that end ill buy a lascannon devastator marine and paint him in the laois GAA jersey. Laoiscannons. :P

Again, thanks murph, your a gent.

My god, I thought I was the only one!

If we can find two more people that's the makings of a club.
