This proabaly won't appeal to most of you, but it is good news for fans of combat sims.

I knew they were working on something for Lock On, I didn't think they were gonna make it multiplayer compatible with DCS:-Black Shark, among many other improvements.

    Blurb....

THE FIGHTER COLLECTION AND EAGLE DYNAMICS TO RELEASE LOCK ON: FLAMING CLIFFS 2.0 UPGRADE

DUXFORD, UK, November 17, 2009 – The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics will release Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 in early 2010. This will be an upgrade to the unofficial Lock On: Flaming Cliffs add-on. Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 will feature all the flyable aircraft of Lock On: Flaming Cliffs and include several fan-requested upgrades to aircraft, sensor, and weapon systems. Lock On: Flaming Cliffs combines a large stable of modern U.S. and Russian aircraft to fly over Russia and Georgia with game play for both casual and hardcore flight simulation enthusiasts.

Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 will feature the same world environment and game functionality as the Digital Combat Simulation (DCS) series and will be online compatible with the Ka-50 attack helicopter simulation DCS: Black Shark www.digitalcombatsimulator.com. Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 will allow Lock On pilots and Black Shark pilots to now fly online together in both cooperative and head-to-head online play.

The Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 upgrade for owners of Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 1.12 will be available for sale as a download from the Eagle Dynamics Lock On web site for $14.99 USD. http://lockon.co.uk/. The upgrade will first be released in English and Russian with French, German, and Spanish versions to follow.

By using the DCS environment, Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 users will have improved terrain, mission editor, AI flight models, 3D objects, artificial intelligence (AI), and multiplayer. The aircraft of Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0 will include:

    • Su-25 (new 3D model)
    • Su-25T
    • A-10A
    • Su-27
    • Su-33
    • MiG-29A
    • MiG-29C
    • F-15C

Several new missions and campaigns will be included in Lock On: Flaming Cliffs 2.0.

    The FAQ...........

    Flaming Cliffs 2.0 Upgrade FAQ

Q: What new features does the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 upgrade add?
A: The following features are added:
    - Runs under DirectX 9C
    - Improved Mission Editor with trigger system
    - New terrain area to include much of Georgia. This will be same map as used in DCS: Blacks Shark. As such the Crimea has been replaced with the addition of Georgia.
    - More detailed terrain to include more ground objects, larger forests, and higher resolution elevation data
    - Improved clouds
    - High resolution airfield textures
    - Improved multiplayer system with embedded game browser
    - More robust online cheating prevention
    - New and improved menu system
    - Numerous new, highly detailed ground units including infantry
    - Improved flight performance for player-controlled aircraft
    - Improved flight models for all artificial intelligence (AI) controlled aircraft
    - New, more realistic G-tolerance modeling
    - Limited 6 DOF cockpits that move up, down and sideways according to maneuvering
    - New and highly-detailed Su-25 model
    - Advanced ballistics are implemented for all flyable aircraft, including ricochets of AP rounds
    - F-15C locked target IFF indication
    - More realistic ranges, seeker guidance and fuzes for air-to-air missiles
    - More realistic electronic countermeasure operation and performance
    - New and improved sound engine
    - New radio message voice-overs

Q: Will my Flaming Cliffs 1.12 missions work with Flaming Cliffs 2.0?
A: Due to a change in the world location and mission editor, they will not. However, when installing the upgrade you have the option to create both Flaming Cliffs 1.12 and Flaming Cliffs 2.0 parallel installs. Flaming Cliffs 1.12 and the upgraded Flaming Cliffs 2.0 will not be online compatible.

Q: Will Flaming Cliffs 2.0 and DCS: Black Shark be online compatible?
A: Yes! You will now be able to fly head-to-head and cooperatively with players flying the Ka-50.

Q: Is a player flyable Ka-50 included in Flaming Cliffs 2.0?
A: No. To fly the Ka-50 you must own DCS: Black Shark. However, AI-controlled Ka-50 helicopters are included in Flaming Cliffs 2.0.

Q: What mission content will be included in Flaming Cliffs 2.0?
A: Each aircraft will have several new single missions and new Su-25 and A-10A campaigns will be included.

Q: Will new documents be provided?
A: Yes. A new Flaming Cliffs manual will be provided as well as a new Install Guide.

Q: Will 3rd party modifications created for Flaming Cliffs 1.12 work in Flaming Cliffs 2.0?
A: Yes, in most cases. However, some minor modifications made need to be made for 3rd party-created aircraft.

Q: What operating systems will be supported?
A: Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

Q: What copy protection will be used?
A: StarForce online activation (only) will be used. Based on the success of DCS: Black Shark protection, we feel this provides the best compromise of user-friendliness and protection of property. Unlike the reported hardware problems reported with an earlier version of StarForce applied to the original Flaming Cliffs, no such issues have been reported with the current online activation method that does not install any drivers to the user’s computer.

Q: When will Flaming Cliffs 2.0 be available?
A: We plan to make the upgrade available for download from the Eagle Dynamics website in January 2010. http://lockon.co.uk/

Q: How much will this upgrade cost?
    A: $14.99 USD

They plan on releasing a full LOMAC to FC 2.0 addon a month or two after the FC to FC 2.0 addon is released if I remember correctly. The Price is unknown, but I'd say it'd be about $25-30.

thanks mate, as an aside do you know anywhere i might get help on trying to map a sitek stick for the game? its one of those av8r ones, i might just get a better one i suppose

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,230 ✭✭✭Nate--IRL--

Don't see anything wrong with that stick TBH. I would suggest mapping the stick in Lock On Itself, rather than with any Saitek software. However should you have any questions the Offical Lock On forums would be your best bet. If you have specific questions I could try to answer them.

I'm really looking forward to this. After getting used to Black Shark, the terrain detail in Lock-On seems a little...lacking.

    Jan update.

    Dear all,

We would like to provide you with some development updates.

Our immediate priority at this time is the finalizing of the Flaming Cliffs 2.0 upgrade for Lock On. The project is currently undergoing final testing, however this does not mean it is immediately close to release. Besides testing and fixing bugs, other important tasks still underway include mission/campaign content generation, training course development, and recording new radio messages. Furthermore, translations from Russian to English and vice-versa are still ongoing and all of these items have to be localized into French, German and Spanish. As you can see, there is still significant development to be done and we are not ready to provide a specific release date beyond the previously mentioned early-2010. Please bear in mind that release dates are always tricky and our goal is not to release as soon as possible, but release as soon as possible with confidence in the quality of the product - maximally bug-free and feature-full.

We are also hard at work on our second DCS module, the A-10C Warthog. There are many new features in development for this project. Expect more details to begin coming out after the FC2 release.

Given the very high workload on both the entertainment and military side of development, we've had to re-prioritize our previously announced third-party support tools. As you know, we've already released terrain development plug-ins and a number of third-party maps are now under development. Among these, very good progress is being made on the Nevada terrain, which we hope to officially include in DCS: A-10C as a training map. We are now working on a new set of terrain tools, which will support some new terrain technologies planned for DCS: A-10C. Our goal is to make terrain creation and rendering easier and more effective. On the other hand, we've had to hold the development of other third-party tools as the team resources are simply being used elsewhere at this point. We realize there is a lot of interest about this and we'll keep you posted if anything changes.

We would also like to share some feature updates for FC2. FC2 will feature the much requested Mission Planner interface. This is an item we've been planning for quite a long time and we are happy to be able to include it in FC2. The Mission Planner will be available from the Briefing menu in the single-player GUI. It will be a simplified version of the Mission Editor, showing only those units not hidden by the mission designer and allowing the player to edit the flight route (excluding take-off and landing points) and payloads/fuel/skins. The Mission Planner will not be available in the multi-player menu. Also, FC2 will feature video-based training. The training course will be based on the FC training module, but re-recorded in FC2 to account for changes and updates, including text subtitles and voice-overs for all aircraft now.

    Thank you.

    New announcement from ED.

    Dear all,

As most of you are aware, the development of Flaming Cliffs 2 has taken much longer than expected. What was originally planned as a two month development cycle has turned into a nine month development cycle. This was primarily due to including much more new content than we had originally planned and an extended beta test period to clean up the product. We wanted to address as many community concerns about Flaming Cliffs as possible.

Unfortunately, time is money and the cost of development has far exceeded what was budgeted. As such, in order for us to at least break even on Flaming Cliffs 2 we have had to increase the sales price to $29.99 USD. This software will both upgrade Lock On to Flaming Cliffs 2 and Upgrade Flaming Cliffs to Flaming Cliffs 2.

We understand that some of you will be upset given the earlier sales price announcement and we apologize for having to make this alteration of our original plan. We do believe though that Flaming Cliffs 2 will be a great product and well worth the cost of admission.

    Thanks,
    Matt

I know this may disappoint some but, I'll still be getting it, and I don't mind the price increase too much. Also this is an excellent upgrade for anybody still fling the original Lomac.

Shame they couldn't add any more planes to fly , its been all those planes since 2003 , wouldn't mind an f18 or f16 in there too :(

Have the graphics improved much over lock on? Worth it just for the graphics?

I'm not a massive flight sim guy but I do enjoy lock on from time to time and it seems there is no other modern combat flight sim. I don't wanna play Acecombat or whatever.. :p

So unless I'm mistaken I assume this is the latest and greatest modern combat flight sim? The same game from 2003 with nicer graphics and engine tweaks?

Yeah that's pretty much the case (Flaming Cliffs added the Su-25T in 2005), until DCS:- A-10C Warthog gets here. They ported the Lock On Aircraft into the DCS:- Black Shark engine. If you want multiplayer you will need this, as I don't think many people fly the older versions now.

Graphically everything is improved in a small way, it is definitely smoother than FC1. But I've been flying Black shark for so long I can't really remember what FC1 looked like.

But really most of the changes are under the hood, improved AI, Sound engine, Campaigns, Radar logic, Missile Logic, extended terrain, multiplayer with Black shark. etc etc.

If you have specific questions I could try to answer them. Better yet would be to try the official forums http://forums.eagle.ru/index.php
