Irregular idle speed on Nissan P11 Primera

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Idle speed should be about 600 - 700 rpm I think. When I come to a stop (like at traffic lights), it sometimes idles at about 1100 rpm until I tap the accelerator, after which it comes doen to a normal 600-ish. Also, when at the lights, it might idle at normal speed, then increase to 1100 for no apparent reason, then drop to 300 rpm after a little while. It's a '97 with 89,000 on the clock, and it was lying up for about a year till about 3 months ago. I did a service on it myself about 2.5 months ago.

Idle air control valve or a collapsed vacuum hose

Had this on a car I had, and a friend had it on another. none of them nissan's so this might not be related, but there was a problem with a build up of "gunk" in the throttle box.
Once this was cleaned out ran smooth as the proverbial baby's bottom

Any of the above or the Mass Air Flow sensor.

Thanks for the replies guys. It's really a problem that I can live with, though, although I'll probably mention it to the mechanic when he's doing the pre-NCT thing next year.

Pre-NCT tests are a scam, don't bother. Your car will fail the NCT if it is not idling within 100RPM of the manufacturer's specifications though, so just get that sorted out. You're probably wasting fuel from the high idling too.

They test emissions at idle speed, it will fail if RPM is out of specs. Read the manual, it's on their website.

Well i have the exact same problem on my a3 and it passed the nct no bother

I've tried everything to fix it but it's still the same. Mainly happens in hot weather so it's a joy to drive at the moment cause only happens the odd time. I'm learning to live with it. Higher fuel consumption is a bit of a pain though.

In the Audi it's more than likely the MAF or lamda sensor - they're notorious for it.
