    I was in Jersey when I was little, AFAIK, it was taken over by the Germans durign the war. They had old rifles you could pick up and sight down the beach... Imagine being 18, given this BRICK of a gun (although I love it the Kar98k, it weighs a ton) and having to sight down that iron sight, shaky hands and fire at someone. That was my first taste of 'physical history' I guess you'd call it. It blew me away.

    Been interested in all of it ever since. I can't begin to imagine how those people fought in that war. (or pretty much any other)

    A friend of mine sent me photos once of German Artillery pieces that have been thrown over a cliff there which become visible at low tide.

    I have played about with a de-activated K98 at the house of a collector and I didn't think it was that heavy really. A little bit akward to use at first but manageable, I'd guess if you were properly trained on it it would be a damn good weapon. He also had some regimental swords which iirc seemed heavier to be honest, the thoughts of swinging one of those from the back of a horse as a primary weapon is really something else. I suppose weapons will always evolve getting lighter and easier to use and more powerful etc but the K98 was not the worst imo.

    I know what you mean OP, when I was in the FCA years ago you had to patch up the targets on the ranges during rifle and LMG shoots.

    While the firing is going on, you're standing below the bank looking up at the targets, and the rounds are flying through and into the earth bank behind them. During a Bren Gun or GPMG shoot this is pretty thought provoking, looking at the bullets churning up the earth in the bank.

    I used to think.....

    Imagine being ordered to run through a hail of that shit ??

    NO FOOKING WAY !!:eek::eek:
