Toe cramp problems....

While swimming front crawl I regularly get a cramp in my toes. My second toe separates from my big toe. I always have to stop as it is quite painful. Most times it ends my sessions. I am wondering has anyone any similar experience, and is there something that can be done to fix/avoid this happening. Thanks....

Sometimes get foot cramps when doing my longer sessions, its from pushing off the wall at the start of each length. Never been bad enough to stop my session, usually wiggle my toes and it goes but if it persists I stretch my foot off the pool floor.

Yeah, I've been having the same problems. I get cramps in my toes a lot and I have to stop swimming over it...

Was having the same problem, apparently it's very common when you're getting back in to shape.
Apparently the trick is to get potassium, magnesium and calcium in to you ... bananas for the potassium, supplements for magnesium and dairy for calcium.

Get them really badly in my calves and toes too... wicked pain for about 3 days after. Haven't got them since I started taking the supplements.

    Hope this helps.

I suffered a lot from extreme cramping. I don't drink milk so I wasn't getting enough calcium.

Another change I made was that I now make sure I'm well hydrated before any major exercise now. Make an effort to drink plenty water every day.

Get a pair of pool fins and use them for a few 100's in the middle of your set, then stretch your feet and calves, after a couple of weeks the flexibility and strength in your feet will develop to the point where the cramps aren't as intense or as frequent anymore....successo.
Also Bananas, a little powerade, and stretches will help...

cramping is caused by a build up of lactic acid in the muscle, this is caused when instead of burning oxygen your muscle runs out of oxgen to burn and instead is trying to respire with carbon dioxide instead. the best way to prevent cramping is to work out the muscle in between swims so that it can get used to being used that much. try wrigling you toes and rolling your ankles, and try flexing your ankles and wrigling your toes in between sets. this sould increase blood flow and stop the cramping in time!
