Do any of the DS models allow ya to play GBA and GB games? Considering picking one up but only if I can play all the pokémon games. :pac:

DS original and Lite both allow you to play GBA however you can't play GB or GBC on it.

A GBA Micro or GBA SP willplay GB and GBC (should be able to pick either up on eBay easy enough).

The other problem with GB and GBC games is they have a built in battery for game saves which could be dead so you can't save your progress. It is possible to change them but only if you're confident with opening and playing with the inside of the cartridges.

Changing a battery in a cart is easier than changing a plug to be honest! I did this long before I could solder. Rather than desolder the old battery I would just slide a thin knife between it and the connector. With a little bit of work the battery will just pop off.

Then you can attach a new battery with tape rather than solder. As long as it's on tight it'll work fine. I have a Snes: Link to the past cart that I did this for about 5 - 6 years ago and it still has the same save on it working away today.

just to be clear that the dsi doesn't allow you to play gb advance games as it doesn't have a gb advance cart slot.

Just to note that you cannot play GB/GBC games on the Game Boy Micro. So the SP would be a better bet on that front

Are you wondering if you can change the battery in Mario Paint? It should be the same as all Super Nes cartridges, the battery is a 'CR2032'. You should pick one up in any Electrical shop, they're about a fiver.
The bit of trouble you will have is opening the carts. Get a 3.8mm gamebit off eBay and you're sorted

Or! Get a clear plastic pen. Heat up one end with a lighter and when it's good and melted push it down into the screw till it takes the form.

And there you go. One free(ish) gambit screwdriver.

Have you ever tried to do this? Man it's one of the worst things you could ever do! Almost impossible to get to work, and you nearly always end up with plastic all over the cart:(
    Or maybe it's just me.

    It just doesn’t feel right.
Even more so now that the GBA carts stick out. I’m thinking of buying a Micro just for playing GBA games on. Has anyone else done this?

Yep! Have 3 of them actually, definitely my console of choice for GBA games, just because they're so damn handy. Shame about not being able to play GB/GBC games on them, but if the GBA carts sticking out of the DS annoys you I could only imagine how you'd feel about a Micro/GB-cart combo!
