today i saw a 08 seat alhambra go up in smoke. i heard it was an electrical fault with the car. if this is right, its absolutely scandalous that in todays age, a car can burst into flams from an electrical fault. anyone else have any other stories about fairly new cars going up in smoke.?????

Remember a 07jetta nearly going up in the car park I was working in at the time.. Only for about 5 fire extinguishers it would gave spread easily.

    Was an electrical fire!

A good few Tata Nanos have gone on fire because of a fault in the steering column.

    http://uk.cars.yahoo.com/23102009/36/tata-nano-fire-controversy-0.html

160000 307s and C4s were recalled because of an ESP problem where a water leak would pose a fire risk 5 307s caught fire in 2005 in Scandanavia, they linked it to salting of the roads. The 307 also had an issue with the starter motor not disengaging and overheating leading to fire.
I seem to remember a tunnel on the continent not allowing 307s through at the time.

Friend of mine was working on an 03 focus, the fuel pump was gone. Turned out when he took the fuel pump out of the fuel tank, it had melted the wires going into it, was almost bare copper. Can't imagine that being too safe.

The Alhambra is hardly a modern car at this stage anyway, being launched in the mid 90's.

I saw a Bora go up in smoke in the car park of Halfords in Carrickmines a while ago. Apparently when the guy went in and asked the staff for an extinguisher they wouldn't give him one without paying for it.

OP, get over the hysteria -

    meanwhile, have a looky, HERE

See, SEAT in good company, now......:)

You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

Sounds about right for halfords staff. They really are brain dead. One half decent staff member and a crowd of zombies in each store.

aren't the merc ambulances basically a sprinter underneath? Because my dad has a 06 sprinter

I got a phone call once from a driver while he was stood at the side of the Stillorgan Dual Carriageway wathching his Laguna burn itself to death. Guy had stopped by the side of him to tell him flames were coming from under the car and it would be a good idea if he parked it up and got the funk out.

About 2 weeks later Renault announced a recall for the power steering pump. It might have leaked on to the exhaust and caught fire. Car was so badly burned that the assesor couldn't give a definate reason why it caught fire, but suspected a leaky power steering pump.

A couple of months ago, Volvo announced a recall on early 2007 S40/V50 1.6D's with a dodgy wiring harness that might cause a fire hazard. One of the cars we had affected by the recall had been burnt out about a month before that. We suspect it was vandalism though, unless the wiring could also cause all the panels to be scratched and all the lights smashed.

I'm guessing that because it's an ambulance it has auxilary belts for running the power to the back end, there's a good chance the problem is a result of the ambulance conversion.

To be honest, newer cars have more electrics, which means more to go wrong.

New cars go wrong all the time!

Is the Alahambra not built buy VW as the Sharan and then rebadged?

If my car was outside starting to burn and I didnt have an extinguisher(which I do) I wouldn't be asking for it I would be taking the thing and running to the car and returning after to pay.

Just behind the Land Rover Defender probably.

I know but doesn't it say a lot about their staff really? They would rather put people's lives at risk than give a guy a fire extinguisher in an emergency without payment.

Needless to say, the car was more or less finished within minutes.

The electrical fault might not have been of Seats doing. Parking sensors might have been fitted , a phone kit or an alarm might also have been added afterwards. The workmanship might just be the problem. Lots of stuff from DVD players to thoses crappy chinesse plug in phone chargers are after thoughts , all of which are outside the remit of a Seat quality controller ;)

Read somewhere before very wet weather is a fire risk for cars; as electric components are more likely to get wet and short causing fires, ironically enough...
