IT Contracting and Mileage Rates 2009

    Hi,

I've just started working as an IT contractor, a lot of the time as a field engineer, and I'm a little bit confused about mileage rates. Quite simply, I've quoted the 2009 civil service rates for my 2L car, 0.59c per km. As I'm only contracting for the next few months before leaving the country, there's no way I'm going to hit the 6500km before the rate drops.

The company I'm currently contracting for seem to think the applicable rate is 0.29c per km and I believe they're going to try to foist this on me.

As a contractor, do I have to go with whatever rate they decide or is my own rate fine?

Would just like to have the facts at my command! Apologies if this thread is in the wrong place!

    T.

The rate of 0.59 is the maximum allowable rate which can be paid tax free. This is the rate that civil servants receive as agreed with the unions.
It is up to each individual employer to set their own rates. A rate of 0.29c would be quite a common rate
    Regards,

Yes, but there is a difference between what you are entitled to claim and what employers decide as their company policy, to pay.
