Company never put me on the books?!

Here's the issue. I've been working in this job for a year and 2 months now. The salary is very good and the work has been manageable.
Anyhow, After about 3 months I asked if they had my tax sorted and they said it would be sorted once a new accountant was hired. In the meant time they kept back about €1000 of my salary a month for paying tax.
So eventually after major delays they got an accountant a few months ago. The accountant has totted up the amount that they owe in tax for me. There is a few grand left over that I'm owed.
The thing is they seem to be avoiding the issue when ever I mention it. They've also only been able to pay salaries in half's the last 2 months. The money seems to have dried up. I may be out of the job soon having never been put on the books at all
So as it stands they owe me close to 4 grand and the govt a good amount more then that.
    what should I do?
Could I get in trouble for allowing them to not pay my taxes?

Were you receiving a payslip every pay period? You are entitled by law to get one. It sounds like they weren't paying your PRSI etc. Talk to HR and explain what your entitlements are and request they address them. Then Labour Court.

Once they deducted the tax etc from you, your obligation is filled.

Do you have a written contract or anything that can proof that you are legally employed by this supposed company?

Also, you are hardly allowing them not to pay your taxes, otherwise you'd be as guilty as they are :)

Did you not get a P60 from the tax office each year? (usually around Feb - April I think). Call citizens information and maybe get legal advice if you have to. I would make them sort it out asap. You should never have let it go on this long. You have rights to pay slips etc.

Your P60 comes from your employer, not the tax office.
